The Great Buddha at Kamakura is a shrine to which thousands of people journey and it is also visited by many thousands of tourists from all over the world, for this great image of bronze is one of the notable sights of Japan. Kamakura is only forty miles from Yokohama, reached by an excellent road which takes the visitor through some pretty sections of Japan. This work in bronze was cast in September 1252 A. D. and although a tidal wave swept over it in 1495, it still stands unshaken, defying the ravages of time." (Prints Supplied To: Hills Brothers.)

A view from shipboard showing the modern docking facilities in Kobe. The mountains in the distance are the Rakko Range and upon Mount Maya, the highest point shown, is the famous Temple dedicated to Madam Maya, the Mother of Buddha. From this high point a panoramic view unfolds itself, with Kobe in the foreground, and beyond, Osaka and the Mountain of Kii.

After a shopping trip around Yokohama, the Hoefler party returned to the leading hotel for refreshments and, strolling to a window, were greeted by this view. The ship to the left of the photograph is the P & O Liner Rajputana, which was their home for many days during their journey from Colombo to Hong Kong; and behind it, to the right, is the Dollar Liner, President Coolidge, which they joined at Hong Kong for the trip to San Francisco. Here were their two ocean homes berthed together and it afforded them an unexpected thrill.

Hoefler's original description: "Kyoto, Japan. This tori or arch is said to be the largest in Japan, and down this street come colorful religious processions from the Temple shown in the distance. Kyoto, because of its antiquity, numerous shrines and temples, is a focal point to which millions of people come annually, some in search of art, some to visit the scenic and historical spots, but mostly pilgrims eager to pray at ancient shrines.

Hoefler's original description: "Kamakura, Japan. At the foot of the Great Daibutsu, this pretty Japanese lady and her young daughter posed for the cameraman from far-away America. Many of the Japanese women are beautiful and when dressed in their native costumes, remind one of brightly colored dolls. It is to be regretted that Western modes of dress have commenced to appear in Japan for they certainly do not fit into the atmosphere of this lovely country.

The Daibutsu, or Great Buddha, at Hase, is one of the most notable monuments in Japan. In the year 737 A. D. the Emperor Shomu, a sincere devotee to Buddhism, caused numerous monasteries to be erected throughout Japan, and among the other churches thus builded is what known as the Ko-toku-in at Kamakura. In the grounds of this monastery was later erected the colossal bronze image known as the Great Buddha, which has withstood the ravages of time and the fury of the elements and is still in an excellent state of preservation.

Hoefler's original description: "Kyoto, Japan. Chion-in Temple. This temple is the headquarters of the powerful Jodo Sect, and millions of people visit it yearly. The term "Jodo" means the "Pure Land" and is applied to this Sect because the ultimate object of all its believers is to be re-born in the Jodo or Blissful Pure Land of Buddha Amida, Lord of the Western Paradise. This Sect was founded in 1211 A. D. by the distinguished Priest Enko Daishi." (Prints Supplied To: Hills brothers.)

This great bronze image of Buddha, known as the Daibutsu was cast in A. D. 1252 by a celebrated Artist Ono Go-ro-ye-mon in accordance with comands received from the Shogun Prince Munetaka. This justly celebrated image is hollow inside and modern metal-workers are amazed at the welding and other workmanship of this huge image, builded to carry out the pious desire of Idano no Tsubone to fulfill the dying wishes of Minamoto no Yoritomo."(Prints Supplied To: Hills Brothers.)
