4 x 5" Negative. Kamakura, Japan. Great Buddha statue. Hoefler's original description: "Kamakura, Japan. The Daibutsu, or Great Buddha, at Hase, is one of the most notable monuments in Japan. In the year 737 A. D. the Emperor Shomu, a sincere devotee to Buddhism, caused numerous monasteries to be erected throughout Japan, and among the other churches thus builded is what known as the Ko-toku-in at Kamakura. In the grounds of this monastery was later erected the colossal bronze image known as the Great Buddha, which has withstood the ravages of time and the fury of the elements and is still in an excellent state of preservation.
