Hearst Museum object titled Coffee pot, accession number 9-23553a,b, described as Tall tea or coffee pot. Decorated with color lithograph of landscape with bus, thick pines, and Revolutionary monument to martyrs at Jingang Mountain, Jiangxi Province (this identification by Pan Gang). The stele is said to be taller than the one in Tiananmen Square. Gold bowstring around rim, spout, and lid as well as gold line on integrated handle. Lemon-yellow band around collar. Small landscape on back shows three figures with red flag standing on bridge. Lower quarter of pot tapers in and is fluted (cf. the train cup CM67 w/ similar detailing). Each item in the set (teapot, cups and saucers catalogued below) has a different seal at lower right of picture. Rather than the name of the site, they are the names of individual craftsmen: Ciping 茨坪, Heshu 荷樹, Mi Shachong 米砂沖.

Inscription: “Lake brilliance, mountain color” (湖光山色 huguang shanse). The front pictures four soldiers (rubber stamped on) climbing a hand-painted turquoise mountain toward a red flag. In the distance is a section of the Great Wall and a high peak. Inscription: The back is inscribed in full-form characters: “Protect home and country” (保家衛國baojia weiguo). Foot: red seal in square standing on a corner: “Produced by ceramic cooperative of Yuanlin, Jiangxi” (江西袁林瓷社出品 Jiangxi Yuanlin ci she chupin)

Inscription: “The lake’s brilliance reaches to the blue sky, sufficient for pure splendor” (湖光连天碧,止足有清辉 hu guang lian tian bi, zhizu you qinghuii). Red circular kiln mark on foot: “Product of no. seven ceramic factory, Jingdezhen” (景德鎮第七瓷廠出品 Jingdezhen di qi cichang chupin)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23488, described as The top register has a decal band of repeated pink flowers. Below, there are two inscriptions, each arranged in two rows.  Inscription: The front of the mug reads: “New Light Underwear Dyeing Plant award at 1957 plant competition” (新光内衣染织厂 一九五七年厂际竞赛奖 Xinguang neiyi ranzhi chang yi jiu wu qi nian changji jingsai jiang). The inscription on the back reads: “Build Socialism” (建设社会主义 jianshe shehui zhuyi). Kiln mark: “Product of Fourth Ceramic Industry Commune, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi” (江西景德镇市第四瓷器工業社出品 Jiangxi Jingdezhen shi di si ciqi gongyeshe chupin). Inscriptions contain a couple of simplified characters that were issued in 1956 and subsequently withdrawn.
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23515, described as The front features a brown and red decal of Wang Jie holding an open book and a pen gazing afar. In front of him is a table with his backpack and some of Mao’s writings. A red poster is inscribed: “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng” (向雷鋒同志學習 xiang Lei Feng tongzhi xuexi), with Mao’s signature; the reverse side is printed with the slogan given below. Inscription: “Enthusiastically disseminate the Highest Directives” (熱情宣傳最高指示 reqing xuanchuan zuigao zhishi). Kiln mark on foot combines English and Chinese: “CHINA Jingdezhen, China” (CHINA 中国景德鎮 Zhongguo Jingdezhen)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, accession number 9-23486, described as A hand-painted scene of a soldier-like figure between two trees in the foreground, waving a red flag, as if signaling to the fortress across the river.  Inscription: “Red flag over Jinjiang” (锦江红旗 Jinjiang hongqi) [note that this style of calligraphy was later imitated in decals in late 1976-1977 following the arrest of the Gang of Four, part of the revival of pre-CR styles]. “Spring of 1953 produced by Jing City ceramic art cooperative of dependents of military martyrs” (一九五三年春月景市烈軍工属陶艺加工合作社出品 Jinjiang hongqi yi jiu wu san nian chunyue jingshi liejun gong shu taoyi jiagong hezuoshe chupin) (followed by a seal). On the back a long inscription by 王守信Wang Shouxin, concludes with: strive to protect the security of the nation (為保衛祖國安全而奮鬥 wei zuguo anquan er fendou).  Foot: Kiln mark: “Cooperative of dependents of military martyrs, Jingzhen” (景镇烈軍工属合作社Jing zhen lie jun gong shu hezuoshe)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23552a,b, described as The deep-pink glaze leaves two lobed panels in reserve. One contains a hand-painted red bird on a pine branch, the other has hand-painted peony blossoms. The pink-ground is incised with a design that continues on the lid. Fu-mei Williams told me that her former mother-in-law had a complete set of this ware when she left China in 1942.
