One portrays a tractor in the middle of a field with light radiating from the horizon. It is framed by wheat garlands on two sides and characters on the top reading “People’s Communes are good” (人民公社好renmin gongshe hao). The other decal pattern portrays green pine branches encircled by a double green ring. Black characters across the branches proclaim: “Happiness for ten-thousand springs” (幸福万年春xingfu wan nian chun).  Inscription: Kiln mark: “New Citizen porcelain factory, Liling 1969” (醴陵新民瓷厂 Liling Xinmin cichang, 1969). Interior has a character (井jing). Place of Origin: Liling, Hunan Province Condition: Signs of wear. Acquisition Data: Beijing, 2002-2003

Hearst Museum object titled Ceramic bowl, accession number 9-23598, described as Object Name: Bowl Materials: Glazed porcelain Diameter at rim: 16 cm  Date: late 1970s or early 1980s Country: People’s Republic of China   Description: The bowl features repeating calla lily blossoms in pink and green, and four characters meaning “Good harvests in four seasons” (四季丰收 siji fengshou). Each character is enclosed in a floral-shaped motif. In late 70s the calla lily blossom was associated in memory with Zhou Enlai because of the photograph of Mao presenting a bouquet of calla lilies to Zhou at the Peking airport in 1960s. In reproductions of the photograph post 1976, Liu Shaoqi was airbrushed out and eliminated from painted versions that were made into posters in 1983 to promote Deng Xiaoping’s position. The hand-painted decal shows two hands shaking are encircled by the ring of a cog, a dove of peace and friendship at the bottom. Two characters on each side, read from right to left: “Worker-Peasant Alliance” (工農联盟 Gongnong lianmeng). A five-pointed star at upper left.  Inscription: “Energetically produce” (努力生產 Nuli shengchan). Kiln mark: “Product of Liling Ceramic Painting Worker’s Commune” (醴陵陶畫工人合作社出品Liling taohua gongren hezuoshe chupin)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23498a,b, described as The mug is decorated with a decal of an opened book resting on pine branches and radiating light, topped by the slogan: Serve the people (为人民服務 wei renmin fuwu) in imitation of Mao’s calligraphic script. The lid is almost flat with a round knob, a design that is typical of the mugs that Liling made for the CCP leaders and the Great Hall of the People; it bears an inscription. Spray painted with a red flower, probably a peony, lush leaves and a budding branch against a full moon. Lid has a five-pointed star, delineated by red spray paint. Inscription: On both body and lid: “Mutual assistance and cooperation” (互助合作 huzhu hezuo). Kiln mark: “Liling Ceramic Painting Workers” (醴陵陶畫工人 Liling taohua gongren, last line illegible but seems to be “cooperative”合作社 hezuoshe)

The same motif is repeated on the lid. Missing its saucer. Inscription: Blue square kiln mark on foot: “Liling, China” (中國醴陵 Zhongguo Liling)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug, lid, saucer and doily, accession number 9-23550a-d, described as Mug with lid, saucer, and doily. The cup has a monochrome decal of the Welcoming pine tree. On the mug, at the lower right, an oval red mark reads “Great Hall” (大會堂 Dahuitang). Black decal pine branches are on the lid and saucer. Lid has the disctinctive flat slope and ball knob of the Liling kilns. The original paper doily is printed in blue with an image of the Great Hall of the People and the name in both English and Chinese.
