Although Ceylon is a small Island it has some large rivers, and needs them all, for during the wet season the daily rainfall is enormous.

The country in which they live has something to do with this, for Ceylon is a cheerful place, with abundance on every side, in sharp contrast to some parts of India. The "Kandy Kid." Labor is cheap in Ceylon and most deliveries are made by boys and men who carry the packages or produce on top their heads. This energetic you Sinhalese was chief delivery boy for the Kandy bakery. He got around so quickly and was seen in so many places within a short period that for a long time Hoefler thought he was twins!

Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. In the native bazaar, Colombo. Such shops as these cater to the Sinhalese trade. A merchant in Ceylon like a merchant in India has very little invested in stock. His capital is small and so he has a little bit of everything and not much of anything, replacing stock as it is sold and living off of the profits as he goes along. The ever-present burden-bearing porter is shown in the picture, carrying a heavy sack of grain.
