Description:
Black and white negative of a merchant in Colombo, Ceylon. Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. In the native bazaar, Colombo. Such shops as these cater to the Sinhalese trade. A merchant in Ceylon like a merchant in India has very little invested in stock. His capital is small and so he has a little bit of everything and not much of anything, replacing stock as it is sold and living off of the profits as he goes along. The ever-present burden-bearing porter is shown in the picture, carrying a heavy sack of grain.
