Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. In the native bazaar, Colombo. Such shops as these cater to the Sinhalese trade. A merchant in Ceylon like a merchant in India has very little invested in stock. His capital is small and so he has a little bit of everything and not much of anything, replacing stock as it is sold and living off of the profits as he goes along. The ever-present burden-bearing porter is shown in the picture, carrying a heavy sack of grain.

A close-up view of a cacao pod on a tree near Kandy. Kandy was the first district in Ceylon to grow cacao, the trees being introduced into Ceylon about 45 years ago from Trinidad, West Indies. There are now approximately 35,000 acres under cultivation in Ceylon; between eight and nine thousand acres in the Dumbara district near Kandy. The harvesting of this crop is a dangerous occupation for the bare-legged natives, for the trees form rank jungles, beneath which is a deep cushion of decaying vegetable matter, constantly added to, and this makes an ideal home for various snakes, the deadly cobra, the carawalla and the palanga.

This gigantic rock, which rises sheer above the surrounding flat land like some ancient castle of somber granite, offers an elevation from which can be obtained a magnificent view of a great part of Ceylon. At the South can be seen the Matale Hills.
