Description:
4 x 5" Black and white negative of a cacao pod. Hoefler's original description: "Island of Ceylon. A close-up view of a cacao pod on a tree near Kandy. Kandy was the first district in Ceylon to grow cacao, the trees being introduced into Ceylon about 45 years ago from Trinidad, West Indies. There are now approximately 35,000 acres under cultivation in Ceylon; between eight and nine thousand acres in the Dumbara district near Kandy. The harvesting of this crop is a dangerous occupation for the bare-legged natives, for the trees form rank jungles, beneath which is a deep cushion of decaying vegetable matter, constantly added to, and this makes an ideal home for various snakes, the deadly cobra, the carawalla and the palanga.
