Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23552a,b, described as The deep-pink glaze leaves two lobed panels in reserve. One contains a hand-painted red bird on a pine branch, the other has hand-painted peony blossoms. The pink-ground is incised with a design that continues on the lid. Fu-mei Williams told me that her former mother-in-law had a complete set of this ware when she left China in 1942.

She places her right hand and foot on a rock while her left hand holds a spear. The reverse side is inscribed with Chairman Mao’s quote. Inscription: Reverse: “Quote from Chairman Mao: They love their battle array, not silks and satins” (毛主席语录 不愛紅粧愛武裝Mao zhuxi yulu buai hongzhuang ai wuzhuang). The reverse side has a poem. A band of scrolling flowers surrounds the rim and a red bowstring is at the foot. The lid features four characters above a patterned band; the knob is topped with red flower motif. Inscription: Decal of couplet in regular script: “Green clothing just coming out, spring in Jiangnan/ light sail on a distant shore, a journey of ten-thousand li” (綠衣初发江南春   遠浦轻帆万里程 lü yi chufa Jiangnan chun, yuan pu qingfan  wanli cheng); lid: “Sampling fragrant tea” (品味香茗 pinwei  xiangming); on foot: “Jingdezhen, China MADE IN CHINA” (中国景德鎮 Zhongguo Jingdezhen MADE IN CHINA)
