Hearst Museum object titled Tray, accession number 9-23878, described as Enamel tray. On a yellow ground two golden birds are stenciled. They perch on top of a banner that reads “Production and Construction” (生產建設Shengchan jianshe) in full form characters. The design is completed with a large red peony, a traditional symbol of prosperity, and nandina (tianzhu 天竹), the red berries of which suggest many sons. The edge is pale green; a dark brown bowstring decorates the rim. Acquisition Data: Panjiayuan, Beijing, Wang Zhanhua王占华, woman vendor from Shenyang, with Bob Thorp. RMB 120, 2006-09-30.
Hearst Museum object titled Tunic, accession number 9-21302, described as Tunic, woman's, Manchu style; embroidered overall with plum blossoms, orchids and other flowers; phoenixes, butterflies, cranes in mostly satin stitch; knot stitch for anthers. Around neck and down sides: a 2 cm black satin strip, surmounted around neck with a 4 cm-wide Mao collar of bias and straight black strips, latter with running gold-thread pattern. Central red strip of collar (same material as body of tunic) embroidered with flowers along center, flanked by blue, green, white and mauve woven tape. 7.3 cm black band with phoenix and other birds in satine stitch among overlaid gold and silver threads forming gourds and flowers, forms giant cloud under arms over side slits, and half-cloud in front of closure under right sleeve. Apple green brocade ribbon (5 cm) with tan background web shows plum and apple blossoms (sign for long life), butterflies, phoenix, enclosed unicorn. Green center flanked by white and maroon lines. Tunic and sleeves of extraordinary width. Outer half of cuff (11 cm) is embroidered in satin stitch with bats, swastikas, butterflies, orchids, peach blossoms, the Ju-i scepter and other flowers. Four black lines and border of stylized lavender, green, and white flowers frame the embroidered region. Bottom seams are slightly rounded. Lining is apple green gauze. Length: 102 cm.; w. at bottom hem 98 cm; width, 75 cm; width of cuff 51.5 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Vest, accession number 9-21304, described as Vest, black Manchu style; detachable front; black silk brocaded in purple; seven top buttons, two side buttons; all mother of pearl; panels bordered with .4 cm  and 3 cm wide strips, and 1.5 cm edging, all in black satin.  Light blue silk lining. Mandarin collar 7.2 cm high, lined with black velvet; outside border collar bordered again with .5 cm and 2.1 cm strips of black satin edged with velvet. W. front panel at bottom 56 cm; back: 52 cm.; L. neckline to bottom 49.5 cm. Fide: Ilse M. Fang, 8/28/2001:  Looks plain but it’s very intricate. May have had purple pattern in weave. Has western buttons.
Hearst Museum object titled Wallet, accession number 9-21255, described as Wallet to be carried in riding boot. (Fide: Ilse M. Fang, 8/28/2001: This is why outside of wallet is smooth, so it can be tucked into boot.) Navy blue silk damask outside.  Inside, the fronts of the two compartments show miniature replicas of belt or button pendants, a purse to be looped over a belt, a mirror and a pouch like this item. The compartments are lined with peach-colored, glazed cotton cloth.  The two fronts are framed with the identical white, light blue and navy blue braids around a woven tape, scalloped on one side and a running pattern of a four-petaled flower.  Left: red dots and navy blue on white; right: red dots and white on navy blue.  On left panel on a black background: a case for a pipe; one for spectacles, a purse.  On right panel on a background of patterned lavender silk: mirror and tobacco or medicine pouch; wallet for a boot.  Each item framed with the same braid as the panels, the miniature wallet even with the same tape. Inside the braid, the pipe pouch body has another braid: blue-white; the spectacle-case, purse and tobacco case, a white cord loosely wound with red; and the mirror, another braid like the outside one. Orchids adorn the pipe pouch, a chrysanthemum the spectacle case; butterflies, the purse; crabapple, the tobacco pouch; and columbine and peach blossom the miniature wallet.  Fide: Ilse M. Fang, 8/28/2001: The inside is just decoration, which is miniatures of larger types of pouches; this wallet has a function, to carry a key or other flat things.  Ochre cords and tassels, the latter wound in blue. Height of wallet: 14.6 cm; width when closed: 9.5 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Wallet, accession number 9-21256, described as Wallet to be carried in riding boot. Covered inside and outside with black broadcloth, bordered with a white, light blue and navy braid. It covers both sides and one bottom together, the other edges separately for the inside and the outside. Top and bottom edges rounded. Inside braids: a narrow green, white pearled tape. Plain outside; inside appliqued with two pink flowering plants. Anthers in satin and know stitch. Both outside and inside made of one piece each. Compartment lined with vermillion red silk, the upper edge with pink, sized cotton cloth. Left panel has a wide inside pocket; the right panel, two narrow ones. Use of inside pockets unknown. A red slip of paper with four cyclical binoms was found in the wallet, stuck in the wide inside pocket. Overall height: 16 cm; width, closed: 9.7 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Washbasin, accession number 9-23857, described as Enamel washbasin. The center is stenciled with two pandas amongst bamboo trees and bamboo shoots. The one in the front raises its head to look at the bamboo leaves on the upper right; the other holds a bunch of bamboo leaves. The upper interior wall is decorated with a green stripe of reverse bamboo patterns. Green edge and a dark blue bowstring decorates the rim. Hearst Museum object titled Washbasin, accession number 9-23856, described as Enamel washbasin. The interior design, executed with transfer and stencil technique, features three sunflowers and green leaves against a lavendar background. “Sunflower” (向阳花Xiangyang hua) is inscribed in red. Pink edge and black bowstring decorates the rim. The exterior is stenciled with red floral pattern. Acquisition data: Baoguosi, Beijing. 13 July, 2006.
Hearst Museum object titled Washbasin, accession number 9-23855, described as Enamel washbasin. A blue bird on a branch with lychee is stenciled on a yellow ground. The bird and branch frame four characters “Safeguard peace” (保衛和平Baowei heping). Green edge and dark blue bowstring decorate the rim. The exterior is stenciled with a band of grey flowers. Acquisition Data: Baoguosi, Beijing. Purchased from Madam Li (born 1959 in Shijiazhuang, wife of Zheng Haisheng鄭海生). She said her parents had received it as a wedding present in 1953 or 1954. Hearst Museum object titled Washbasin, accession number 9-23859, described as Enamel washbasin. The white-ground is stenciled with red inscriptions on the interior wall. A blue bowstring defines the rim. It was made in 1979 as a retirement gift of People’s Liberation Army 305-22 squad (?). Acquisition data: Gift from Wang Jin, Palace Museum colleague. 2008-04-09. Mr. Wang said his father received the washbasin when he retired from the PLA.

Below are two roses in full blossom, one red and one orange. Above the train is a red inscription “Aspiring to travel far and make a difference” (志在 四方Zhi zai sifang). Pink edge and dark blue bowstring decorates the rim. The exterior is decorated with stenciled green wheat pattern.
