Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-164445, described as Unfinished twined basket; open bands; cylindrical shape. Two tags: "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined openwork basket, with untrimmed weft stitch ends, made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The basket has conifer root wefts. The overlay weft material is beargrass and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is one weft row of plain twining, followed by a 0.5 inch of three strand twining, followed by ⅓ inch of plain twining, followed by ⅓ inch of diagonal twining, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 0.5 inch of plain twining. Going up the sides of the basket there is openwork with parallel warps alternating with plain twining. A half an inch below the rim there is a single weft row of plain twining followed by a 1/8th of an inch of openwork crossed warps. This is followed by 1/4 inch of plain twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is paired trapezoids. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is single sided, with the design on the exterior. On the base of the basket the workface is on the interior. On the rest of the basket the workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-164448, described as Unfinished portion of a twined basket with a flaring base.  Tag "Klamath River Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket, in the shape of a candlestick holder. Crossed warp starting knot, very indented.  The warp material is probably willow.  The weft material is conifer root.  The weft design overlay is maidenhair fern with a background of beargrass.  Starting after the starting knot heading towards the base there is 5/8 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining, followed by 1/8th inch of parallel warp openwork, followed by a conifer wrapped rod.  Starting at the starting knot and heading up the neck there is .5 inch of three strand twining followed by plain twining with the last two rows in three strand twining.  The (upper) rim is trimmed.  The main design is three parallelograms on the base and diagonal lines of maidenhair fern on the upper portion.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket has a single-sided overlay with the design on the exterior.  The weft overlay has not been trimmed on the upper interior.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined tourist trade basket globular bowl with lid.  The warps are willow.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the crossed warp starting knot at the base of the bowl there are four rows of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining, after which plain twining continues to the rim, where there is 1/8th inch of openwork, with straight warps. The rim wrapped in beargrass.  Under the wrapping it appears to have a rod and two weft rows of plain twining.  The lid, starting at the knob, has a crossed warp starting knot, with three strand twining to the base of the knob.  The rest of the lid is plain twined up to the rim, which has one weft row of three strand twining and is trimmed.  The design includes two rows of woodwardia triangles separated by checkered beargrass and maidenhair fern.  At the rim there is another row of woodwardia triangles.  The lid has a star/ flower design in beargrass.  The basket as an up to the right slant of weft twist, an exterior workface, and a rightward work direction.  The main overlay is on the exterior with some design coming through to the interior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is red-dyed woodwardia with maidenhair fern and beargrass designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is six elements of beargrass stepped triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided with some overlay on the backface, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the extensive use of red-dyed woodwardia.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basketry covered glass bottle with damaged glass stopper.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel.  The weft material is conifer root and perhaps another darker material at the neck.  The weft design overlay is maidenhair fern, red-dyed woodwardia and a beargrass background.  Starting after the starting knot there are two weft rows of plain twining, followed by .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by 2.5 inches of plain twining, followed by .25 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining all the way up to the neck where there is plain twining over two warps for the last 2.25 inches.  The main design is a horizontal band of six alternating orientation triangles rimmed with flag-like protrusions.  The rim is trimmed.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

The rim is trimmed. The pedestal has a rim that is wrapped in beargrass. The design includes diagonal slashes of red dyed Woodwardia. The basket as an up to the right slant of weft twist, an exterior workface, and a rightward work direction. The main overlay is on the exterior but the interior has overlay as well.
