- Description:
- a) Small twined basket. b) Knobbed lid. Tag "Klamath River Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined tourist trade basket globular bowl with lid. The warps are willow. The weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern. Starting at the crossed warp starting knot at the base of the bowl there are four rows of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining, after which plain twining continues to the rim, where there is 1/8th inch of openwork, with straight warps. The rim wrapped in beargrass. Under the wrapping it appears to have a rod and two weft rows of plain twining. The lid, starting at the knob, has a crossed warp starting knot, with three strand twining to the base of the knob. The rest of the lid is plain twined up to the rim, which has one weft row of three strand twining and is trimmed. The design includes two rows of woodwardia triangles separated by checkered beargrass and maidenhair fern. At the rim there is another row of woodwardia triangles. The lid has a star/ flower design in beargrass. The basket as an up to the right slant of weft twist, an exterior workface, and a rightward work direction. The main overlay is on the exterior with some design coming through to the interior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
