Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70129, described as Coiled, plate shape.  Tag:  "Mission Type". Per Ralph Shanks: Broad bowl.  Made for sale.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  Wefts are sumac background and primarily juncus designs.  The designs include five butterflies, two with orange juncus wings the others have sumac wings. Also present is a lizard and a five pointed star at the base.  There are also some filler designs towards the rim. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction and bound under weft fag ends.  The coil rim is plain wrapped with two back stitches at the coil ending.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70151, described as Coiled, plate shape.  Tag "Mission Type". Second cloth tag on base "4". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled flaring basket bowl.  The coil foundation is deergrass bundle.  The background wefts are orange, tan and black dyed juncus, as well as sumac.  The design is a five pointed star/flower repeated in various colors. The basket has an interior workface with clipped, tucked, and concealed weft fag ends, and a rightward work direction.  The rim is plain wrapped and the coil ending is tapered.  Due to the clipped weft fag ends and the use of materials the basket is attributed to the Cahuilla.

Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70290, described as Coiled, bowl shape. 1-70287-70290 not typical Mission but apparently made of sumac sewing, grass coil, Juncus design.  Tag "S.Calif.  Type Juncus weed or twig coil, sumac." Tag "711". Per Ralph Shanks:  Broad flaring coiled basket bowl.  The basket has a deergrass bundle foundation and sumac background with black dyed juncus designs.  The designs are two bands of undulating geometric and floral patterns.  The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction.  The weft fag ends are bound under as well as clipped.  The rim is plain wrapped with a tapered coil ending with .5 inch herringbone stitching.  There is staining on the interior, probably not from use.  Possibly but not definitively Cahuilla made.

Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70223, described as Coiled, globular.  Slightly bottle neck.  Tag "Mission type".  Second Tag "1022 MLX GSX".  Written on bottom "YMS-85P 85" Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular coiled basket bowl with short neck.  Bundle foundation.  The background wefts are most likely willow.  The design wefts are tan, orange and black dyed juncus.  The design is a horizontal chain diamonds around the side and a flower/star on the base.  The basket has an exterior workface, rightward work direction, and tightly bound under weft fag ends.  The rim is plain wrapped; the coil ending is tapered. The basket is not typical of Southwest California including the choice of materials, the narrowness of the weft stitches, and the style of the weft fag ends.  The basket shows influences of the Chemehuevi or other tribe to the east/north of the Cahuilla.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Low broad basket bowl with straight sides.  Foundation of deergrass bundle.  The weft at the base of the basket is possibly sumac with primarily orange and tan juncus throughout the rest of the basket.  Designs are in light wefts on the bottom and darker orange on the sides.  Workface is on the exterior of the basket.  Rightward work direction, with bound under weft fag ends.  The rim is plain wrapped with a slight taper at the end.  Basket is soiled on interior with ink or other sticky substance adhering to it.

Deer grass bundle foundation.  The light wefts are yucca or fan palm; the dark wefts are natural orange and tan juncus.  The design is curvilinear diagonal stripes.  The basket has an exterior workface, rightward work direction, and bound under weft fag ends.  The rim is plain wrapped; the coil ending is tapered and has a herringbone finish for two and a half inches.  The basket has many features common to the Cahuilla including the use of yucca or fan palm, but is not definitively Cahuilla.

Plain wrapped rim with several backstitches at the coil ending.  Rightward warp direction.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  Wefts are juncus, both natural tan and orange, as well as black dyed.  Designs are zoomorphic, floral and geometric.   This basket has Cahuilla characteristics with both clipped fag ends and bound under fag ends, as well as the use of the design layout of isolated figures.

Exterior tag "Mission Type [crossed out] 1-70335". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled small globular basket bowl.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  Tan, orange, and black juncus wefts.  Designs are three bands of black dyed juncus frets.  Exterior workface, with a rightward work direction, and clipped fag ends as well as a few bound under weft fag ends.  Plain wrapped rim, with alternating orange and tan juncus and a blunt coil ending with one back stitch.  Based on the use of clipped weft fag ends mixed with a few bound under fag ends, the grass bundle foundation, the design features, and materials the basket is attributed to the Cahuilla.
