Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-12053, described as Very old hemispherical parching basket with mended bottom.  Two tags:  "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled flaring basket bowl, used for parching, but of similar shape as a Yuki cooking basket.  The basket has burns on the interior as well as food debris. The basket has a twined start, which has been repaired.  The basket has a rod and splint foundation.  The wefts are redbud, peeled and unpeeled.  The design is four-five horizontal stepped bands. The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is missing. The weft fag ends are both tucked and clipped.  The moving ends are difficult to see, some are concealed.  Most of the stitches are not split on the back face and are non-interlocking.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.

Peeled shoots sewn onto rim to form hoop. Per catalog card "cnecs".  Tag: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined cooking basket, used.  Crossed warp start.  Peeled shoot warps, with conifer root wefts.  There is plain twining for 1 inch at the start followed by a row or two of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by a single weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim, where there are three weft rows of three strand twining.  The rim is wrapped, with three rods attached with a light material, possibly willow.  The basket undulates.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Looks quite used, very grimy; 2 gaps in rim.  2- faced white overlay; a one step up, one step down design of 7 equidistant stripes.  3-strand twining 2.5 cm radius from start, 1 row 8 cm from start.  "Cnecs" per catalog card.  Tag: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined cooking basket, used.  Crossed warp start, with the warp sticks in a non-Northwest California style.  Peeled shoot warps, with conifer root wefts and a beargrass overlay.  There is three strand twining for 1.5 inches at the start followed by plain twining for 2 1/4 inches, followed by a single weft row three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim.  The rim is trimmed, flush, with no warp sticks extending beyond the rim.  The basket undulates.  The design is a one step up, one step down design of 7 equidistant stripes, with a final horizontal row of checkered overlay.  The overlay is two sided, with the exterior workface as the primary side.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.

Twined; 2 ragged spots where hoop is broken off rim; quite worn from use.  3-strand twining at start, 5 cm radius; also 1 row 12 cm from rim and just below rim.  Very grubby. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined cooking basket, used with food residue.  Crossed warp start, indented, with the warp sticks in a non-Northwest California style.  Peeled shoot warps, with conifer root wefts.  The rim is wrapped, with peeled/unpeeled shoots attaching several rods.  The basket undulates. The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  There are at least two native repairs on the base.  Barrett spoke with the Yuki couple who he purchased this basket from, Dutchman and his wife, who claimed this basket was made by an old Yuki man.  The basket has Wailaki characteristics as Barrett seems to have asserted, as there are no known twined Yuki cooking pots, Yuki only coiled their cooking baskets as far as it is known.
Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-12009, described as Very old large hemispherical basket.  Tags "Yuki" second tag "40-A". Per Ralph Shanks:  Wide coiled bowl, in the shape of an acorn mush cooking basket.  It has extensive staining, burns, and residue.  There are some insect holes.  The start is twined.  The coil foundation is splints with unpeeled redbud rods.  The weft material is redbud, peeled and unpeeled.  The design includes the base which is unpeeled redbud followed by diagonally stacked peeled and unpeeled redbud parallelograms all the way to the rim.  There are no random rectangles.  The rim is plain wrapped; with the rim coil ending missing, there are about six stitches missing.  The rim is glued in several places, as well as deliberately cut.  The weft fag ends are primarily clipped, with some concealed; the weft moving ends are concealed.  30% of the wefts are split on the interior, less than 20% are split on the exterior.  The wefts are non-interlocking.  The basket has an exterior workface.  It has a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.

The coil foundation is rod and splints.  The background wefts are peeled redbud, and the weft designs are in unpeeled redbud.  The design is horizontal bands, one to two coils wide, some with breaks.  The basket has many random rectangles.  The rim is plain wrapped.  The coil ending is missing, two back stitches remain.  The weft fag ends are primarily bound under.  The weft moving ends are primarily concealed, with a few bound under.  The workface has a few split stitches; the back face has many split stitches.  The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction, and a primarily down to the right slant of weft twist.

Rim a little flared, 1-faced overlay, white, 3 bands of parallel diagonal lines.  Flat bottom, first 3 cm radius from start in 3-strand twining, the next 3 cm radius each row alternates, 1 plain twining, then one 3-strand twining.  Top row plain twining, second row 3-strand twining, third row peeled shoots held on by lattice twining.  Worn and grimy from use.  Two tags "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined cooking basket, used. Per Ralph Shanks:  Broad flaring coiled bowl, in the shape of cooking/ parching basket.  The basket appears unused. The basket has a twined start.  The coil foundation is rods and splints.  The weft designs are in unpeeled redbud and the design background is in peeled redbud.  The design includes four vertical bands of amplified stacked triangles with a vertical band of amplified squares in their center.   Between each of the vertical designs is one downward pointing triangle.  There are random rectangles.  The rim is plain wrapped.  The primary design continues to the rim.  The rim coil ending is slightly tapered, with about three back stitches.  The rim has a larger diameter coil than the rest of the basket.  The weft fag ends are bound under a few concealed or clipped; the weft moving ends are concealed.  More than 50% of the wefts are split on the interior, less than 10% are split on the exterior.  The wefts are non-interlocking.  The basket has an exterior workface.  It has a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.

White two-faced overlay, 3 horizontal stripes, top band of horizontal triangles.  3-strand twining 3.5 cm radius from start; also 2 top rows.  The third and fourth rows from rim are lattice-twined. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, slightly oval, with the warps at a non-perpendicular angle.  The weft is confer root with an overlay of beargrass, and peeled shoot warps.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket mildly undulates.  The fact the basket is twined and has lattice twining at the rim reinforces the claim that this is a Wailaki cooking pot, as Yuki made coiled cooking baskets.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Wide brimmed coiled cooking basket.  There is some residue on the bottom interior as well as abrasions and two burns on the interior wefts.  The starting knot is twined and sewn over.  The coil foundation is peeled redbud shoot rods and splints.  The weft background is peeled redbud and the weft design is unpeeled redbud.  The design is five sets of three horizontal bands of redbud with a break in the design that lines up.  There are three unique designs at the breaks, including an area of checkering, near the rim.  There are no random rectangles, which is unusual for a Yuki basket. The rim is entirely in unpeeled redbud.  The coil ending is blunt with three diagonal overstitches. The weft fag ends are bound under.  The weft moving ends are concealed.  The weft stiches on the exterior are less than 5% split.  The weft stiches on the interior are more than 50% split.  The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.
