Very old twined cooking basket; caked with grime from use; thick weft. 3-strand twining 2.5 cm radius from start, 1 or 2 rows occur frequently. Peeled shoots sewn onto rim to form hoop. Per catalog card "cnecs". Tag: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking basket, used. Crossed warp start. Peeled shoot warps, with conifer root wefts. There is plain twining for 1 inch at the start followed by a row or two of three strand twining, followed by plain twining for 1 1/2 inches, followed by a single weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim, where there are three weft rows of three strand twining. The rim is wrapped, with three rods attached with a light material, possibly willow. The basket undulates. The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.
