The inscription reads: The Red Sun rises from Shaoshan (韶山升起红太阳 Shaoshan shengqi hongtaiyang); sunflower blossom in green printed beneath each motif; the interior embossed with a character 孟 meng. The reverse is inscribed with caption, date and signature (Shunfa 順發). The rim is gilded; the lid is decorated with a boy servant with a guqin, inscribed on the reverse side. Hearst Museum object titled Teapot, accession number 9-23865a,b, described as Enamel teapot with lid. The front and back are both spray painted on a white ground with two red peony or poppy blossoms with green leaves. A blush of yellow is at the lower left. The small differences front and back are revealing of the spray painting technique. But the real significance of the teapot is in the Reservoir brand seal on the foot. It refers to the program of ruralelectrification all over China and more specifically to the Thirteen Tombs Reservoir north of Beijing which was a communal effort in 1958-59 by tens of thousands of people.
