The Great Buddha at Kamakura is a shrine to which thousands of people journey and it is also visited by many thousands of tourists from all over the world, for this great image of bronze is one of the notable sights of Japan. Kamakura is only forty miles from Yokohama, reached by an excellent road which takes the visitor through some pretty sections of Japan. This work in bronze was cast in September 1252 A. D. and although a tidal wave swept over it in 1495, it still stands unshaken, defying the ravages of time." (Prints Supplied To: Hills Brothers.)

Hoefler's original description: "Bhopal State, central India. A beautiful stretch of Bhopal jungle, showing tiger beaters at the end of a beat. In the dry season of the year tigers congregate in the districts affording shelter, food and water, The shikaris, in the employee of the Ruling Princes, are aware of the whereabouts of practically every tiger in their State, and through highly organized departments of shikar (hunting) are able to produce a tiger at the command of His Highness for the purpose of entertaining his guests.

The word "flamingo" is derived from the word "flame" and was given to this bird on account of its brilliant plumage. The long slender legs and webbed feet are scarlet and purple; the odd-shaped beaks are of the same color, and excepting for the crimson under the wings and the black-tipped pinion quills, the bird shades from a pale pink to a rosy hue. The commotion from these millions of birds produces a constant sound, a ceaseless hissing and kronking.

A close-up view of a cacao pod on a tree near Kandy. Kandy was the first district in Ceylon to grow cacao, the trees being introduced into Ceylon about 45 years ago from Trinidad, West Indies. There are now approximately 35,000 acres under cultivation in Ceylon; between eight and nine thousand acres in the Dumbara district near Kandy. The harvesting of this crop is a dangerous occupation for the bare-legged natives, for the trees form rank jungles, beneath which is a deep cushion of decaying vegetable matter, constantly added to, and this makes an ideal home for various snakes, the deadly cobra, the carawalla and the palanga.

Hoefler's original description: "Rajpipla, India. The prisoners is the Rajpipla Central Jail are fed twice daily on a weighed and balanced diet. The utmost simplicity is observed, the food being served on one large plate, the prisoner using his fingers and pieces of bread in place of the usual table equipment. The Central Jail is, in fact, the State Penitentiary. It is well kept and very clean." (Prints Supplied To: International News.)
