Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-255028, described as Round, convex with incurving sides, flat bottom. Plain twined with half - twist overlay. Geometric design in black and red - brown on glossy yellowish white field.  Tag:  "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is uncertain, possibly hazel.  The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is .5 inch of three strand twining followed by 1 inch of plain twining followed by 1 weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues up to the rim where the uppermost weft row is three strand twining.  At the base there is a band of beargrass overlay followed by a ring of woodwardia with maidenhair fern diagonals coming off of that.  The main design consists of rectangles with triangles, alternating above and below a center line.  At the rim is another band of woodwardia and maiden hair.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface.  The overlay is on the outside.  The rim is trimmed.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Vertical zigzag design in black on glossy yellowish white field. Bands of light brown.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Basket bowl. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass and the designs are in red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is 3/4 inch of three strand twining followed by plain twining until the edge of the base where there are two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues up to the rim where there are three weft rows of three strand twining.  At the base there is a band of beargrass overlay.  The main design is outlined in two bands of woodwardia and maidenhair horizontal lines.  The main design six vertical zigzags. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an exterior workface.  The overlay is on the outside.  The rim is trimmed, with the warps extending a little beyond the last weft row.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Chevron and stepped triangle design in red - brown and black on wheat colored field, bands of light brown.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket".  Indented crossed warp starting knot.  Overlay on the outside.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia fern.  At the starting knot there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, after that 1/2 inch of plain twining, after that 2 inches of diagonal twining, followed by 3 weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until 1/4 inch from the rim, were there is a weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining.   The warp sticks are finely trimmed at the rim.  Starting at the base the design includes beargrass in a sun/spiral design; the main body design is three red chevrons outlined with triangles.   Directly below the rim are triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface.  Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, possibly Karuk based the designs and the diagonal twining.  There are two hairs in the middle of one of the main designs.

The weft overlay background is beargrass, with designs in red dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is two inches of three strand twining followed by plain twining to the rim. The rim is trimmed.  The basket is almost entirely covered in overlay.  The main design is diagonal zigzags with diagonal stacked triangles on either side.  The base does not have overlay, until the edge which has beargrass triangles.   The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist, and a rightward work direction.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
