Hoefler's original description: "British India. Photograph shows Paul Hoefler with his motion picture equipment on top of the superb gateway of red-sandstone which spans the entrance to the garden wherein stands the Taj Mahal. A glimpse of this justly famous building is shown and two of the towers that flank it. The white marble used in the construction of the Taj was obtained from Jaipur and the red-sandstone from Fatehpur Sikri. It is said on good authority that the total cost of the Taj and adjacent buildings was ten and one-half million dollars, a stupendous sum when it is realized that very little, or nothing, was paid to the workmen.

Hoefler's Original description: "British India. A close-up view of one of the borders of multi-colored inlay in the entrance way to the Taj Mahal. These borders of flower-shaped inlays are composed of tiny veri-colored stones set into the white marble walls. The materials used are cornelian, onyx, jasper, coral from Ceylon, and chrysolite from the Nile. It is claimed by the inhabitants of Udaipur that the Emperor Shah Jahan gained his inspiration for its style of architecture from The Jag Mandir Island Palace in Pichola Lake, where he spent some time in exile while Prince Khurram. Hoefler's original description: "Jaipur, Rajputana, India. The priest who attends to the wants of the sun god. In a country where poverty and half-starvation are the lot of the majority of the people, being a priest has many advantages. During the annual procession all the priest has to do is to wave some colored sticks and lighted candles in front of the sun god's face, and between times, to gather in the coins and assorted vegetables that are cast by the multitudes at the feet of the god. Later, after returning to the temple, the old man can be found counting the coins and sorting the carrots from the cabbages and potatoes. One ripe tomato had flown a little high and the bright red spot left by its landing decorated his white flowing beard." (Prints Supplied To: Mondiale, London; International News.)

This work was begun at Bombay previous to the departure of the Expedition from its headquarters; and by perserverance and with the elapse of enough time, the work was completed - upon the return of the Expedition to Bombay, just before it sailed for home!"
