Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-70245, described as Coiled, bowl shape.  Tag "Mission 1938"  L and other parts of tag have been ripped off.  String tag "Mission 1938 deer head design" Per Ralph Shanks:  Low broad coiled basket bowl.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  The design wefts are black dyed juncus and a red material.  The design background wefts are sumac.  Designs include two rows of five deer heads.  The top row antlers go to the rim of the basket.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction.  The weft fag ends are bound under. The rim is plain wrapped and the coil ending is tapered with a few backstitches.  There is a hair woven into the basket near the rim.  Basket may have been used.

Tag "Mission Type Oval Bowl Yucca Juncus". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled oval globular bowl.  Not used.  It has a bundle foundation, not deergrass.  The background wefts are a light material and the designs are orange and black-dyed juncus. The design is 12 female figures.  The basket has an oval starting knot. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The weft fag ends are clipped and bound under.  The rim is plain wrapped with a tapered coil ending.  The use of materials and the clipped fag ends suggests this is could possibly be Cahuilla.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Flaring bowl.  The basket has a deergrass bundle foundation and orange, tan and black dyed juncus design wefts.  The background wefts are sumac.  The designs include a horizontal chain of diamonds on the side and on the base is a five petaled flower with complex designs inside the petals.  The workface is on the interior.  The wefts are bound under and the work direction is to the right.  The basket has a plain wrapped rim with a slightly tapered coil ending. The basket is possibly Cahuilla.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled globular basket bowl.  The basket has a grass bundle foundation.  The background material is sumac.  The design materials are black dyed juncus.  The design is a horizontal band of two stacked diamonds.  The basket has an exterior workface and is woven in a rightward work direction.  The weft fag ends are predominately clipped with some tucked.  The rim is plain wrapped with a tapered coil ending.  The mixed use of clipped and tucked fag ends and the materials used makes this likely to be a Cahuilla basket.  The design however is common in Luiseño baskets, which rarely have clipped fag ends.

Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-14478, described as Bowl basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens), weft is Rhus. Pattern is yellow Juncus. Fide James C. Moreno 2/15/83: Flat basket, edge rather sharply upturned, faint narrow ornament in brown. The so called slight arrow design is there for the purpose of raising up the sides of the basket so the husks on dry acorns would rub off easier.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled basket bowl with slightly flaring vertical sides.  Not used.  The coil foundation is deergrass bundle.  The background wefts are sumac and the design wefts are primarily black dyed with some orange juncus.  The primary design is a diamondback rattlesnake, at the bottom are three geometric designs, other animals on the sides include a goat, a rabbit, a bird, and a lion.  The basket has an exterior workface with clipped weft fag ends and a rightward work direction.  The rim is plain wrapped with a slightly tapered coil end.  Due to the design layout and the use of clipped fag ends this basket can be attributed to the Cahuilla.  There is a hair woven into the side.

Deergrass bundle foundation.  Wefts are sumac background and primarily juncus designs.  The designs include five butterflies, two with orange juncus wings the others have sumac wings. Also present is a lizard and a five pointed star at the base.  There are also some filler designs towards the rim. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction and bound under weft fag ends.  The coil rim is plain wrapped with two back stitches at the coil ending.
