Hoefler's original description: "Typical Ifi pygmies. Belgian Congo. Fully equipped for war or for the hunt. These brave and cunning dwarfs will stalk to within a few feet of an elephant and with their short knifes will hamstring the huge animal and then while it is helpless, one stands guard while others run to the nearest villages and by means of the drums call the clans together. Meeting at the hapless elephant they spear him to death, then amid high carnival they feast and dance day and night until the entire carcass has been devoured. Two pygmy men of the Ituri forest. They are fully equipped for the hunt. These brave dwarfs will stalk to within a few feet of an elephant and by means of a short knife will hamstring the huge animal, then while it is helpless, they spear it to death. After the kill the drums sound the call through the dark forest places and the clan collects from far and near to feast until all the flesh has been devoured."

Hoefler's original description: "Belgian Congo. A royal court in pygmy-land. Beneath a canopy of palm and banana leaves the head-chief, or king, held court. His family and ministers attended upon him. In front of this throne in the clearing the drums beat and his subjects dances. The rhythm soon overpowered the royal dignity and it was not long until the whole court joined the dance.

Without drums these little folks would find life very uninteresting for the drums supply them with entertainment and also with news from other villages. By the means of drums they send and receive messages. It is their telegraph and newspaper. By means of the drums they call the clans to war, to the feasts of meat when an elephant has been called, to the ceremonial moon dances and by them they tell of strangers who are in the forest."

Image shows a large group of pygmies standing in a clearing. Hoefler's original description: "Belgian Congo. Lining up for a dance. Ituri Forest. After making contact with them through a friendly Momvu chief who brought six of them to us, we moved deep into the forest and made this clearing. Having the confidence of the first half dozen they sent out messages over the drums and brought one hundred and seven of the dwarfs into our camp. Hoefler’s Clearing. Ituri Forest Pygmies. After penetrating into the forest we established a camp in a clearing and through a local Momvu chief succeeded in getting half a dozen pygmies to visit us. Kept them a day and having gained their trust, they sent out a message over the drums which brought one hundred and seven of the little men and women, with their children, into the clearing.
