Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-28559, described as Openwork burden basket.  Bottom repaired.  Plain twined, bottom rounded.  Several shoots are lashed to inside of rim with buckskin, now reinforced in 2 places with cotton string and a knitted strip of cotton.  The stiff leather strap goes around the back of the basket, tied on by thongs.   There is also a piece of rope tied to a buckskin loop and a loop tied on rim of gauzy cotton.  Three tags: "Nongatl".  One tag has Wailaki crossed out. Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork burden basket.  Crossed warp start, much repaired.  Peeled shoots are used warp, weft, and reinforcing rods, possible hazel and other shoots.  Parallel warps throughout the basket except at the rim, where there is one row of crossed warps.  The rim has braided warps bent to the left and inward.  Rightward work direction and up to the right slant of weft twist.

Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is possibly hazel or willow.  There are three handles made out of old cloth.  Starting at the starting knot, there is close-spaced plain twining, often over two warps during the first few inches, followed by open-work plain twining with parallel warps.  Plain twining continues to the rim, where the warps are braided and bound down on the interior.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven into the side of the basket.

Dawson 6/3/59.] Per Ralph Shanks:  NW California; open work burden basket with bottom repairs; up to right weft twist; weft is conifer, warp not sure, too dirty to tell; possibly willow. Shows heavy use. Could be 1-11660, check for warp crossed in groups of 4's below rim.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Open twined burden basket with three leather straps.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp and weft material is probably willow.  At the starting knot there is closely spaced plain twining until the edge of the bottom of the basket.  After that open spaced plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is braded with the warp sticks bound down on the interior of the basket.  There are three rows of crossed warps below the rim.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-67894, described as Burden basket. Per Ralph Shanks:  Three strand twining at base; the rest of basket is plain twined.  Hazel warp sticks and conifer root weft.  Overlay design is only in beargrass.  Design band below rim with two interlocked parallelograms.  Then V shaped chains of parallelograms.  Undulating sides are common to Southern Humboldt Athabascans.  Leather reinforcing at rim is lashed on in typical Lassik style although this type of lashing could be used by neighbors as well.

Made of peeled willow and white grass.  Tag "NW Cal att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork twined burden basket with two cloth handles.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp and weft material is probably willow.  At the starting knot there is closely spaced plain twining until the edge of the bottom of the basket, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  After that there is widely spaced plain twining contining to the rim, where there is one row of crossed warps.  The rim is braided with the warp sticks bound down on the interior of the basket.   The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Very large, truncated cone, plain twined openwork. Bottom more closely woven, warp ends braided together. Blackened by smoke.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork burden basket, flattened and broken.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The wefts are possibly willow.  The basket is plain twined, with the distance between weft rows consistent at approximately an inch.   The warps at the rim are woven together and bound down on the interior.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  Due to the condition of the basket the workface and work direction is undetermined. There is commercial string with bailing wire on one of the rim fragments.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
