Burden basket. Open work twined with band around rim of plain twining, geometric design in straw and brown. Made of peeled willow and white grass. Tag "NW Cal att." Per Ralph Shanks: Openwork twined burden basket with two cloth handles. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp and weft material is probably willow. At the starting knot there is closely spaced plain twining until the edge of the bottom of the basket, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. After that there is widely spaced plain twining contining to the rim, where there is one row of crossed warps. The rim is braided with the warp sticks bound down on the interior of the basket. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.
