Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled flaring basket bowl, probably used for sifting.  The basket has food debris inside it.   The start is a tight spiral coil start.  The basket has a single rod coil foundation with splints.  The wefts are of uncertain material (s), white/tan with dark brown designs.  The design is four stepped bars with rectangles on the inside. The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is slightly tapered, with six back stitches. The weft fag ends are bound under and trimmed.  The moving ends are concealed and some are trimmed.   Almost all of the stitches are split on the back face.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.

Tight spiral coiled start. Three rod foundation of peeled shoots.  Redbud wefts, both peeled and unpeeled.  The overall design is alternating horizontal bands of peeled and unpeeled redbud.  There are no random rectangles.  The rim is much damaged, but was wrapped.  The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction and a primarily down to the right slant of weft twist.  The weft fag ends are clipped and concealed; the moving ends are obscured by residue.  There are about 50% split stitches on the interior and exterior.

The basket has a twined start.  The coil foundation is mixed three rod and splint.  The wefts are redbud, peeled and unpeeled.  There are 1 1/2 inches of wefts at the start that appears to be sedge or some other material.  The design is two pairs of vertical triangle like shapes on opposite sides of the basket.  The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is missing, and was cut.  The weft fag ends are primarily bound under and some are trimmed.  The moving ends are primarily concealed and some are clipped.  About half of the stitches are split on the back face, and are non-interlocking.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.

The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and the wefts have a down to the right slant of weft twist.  The weft fag ends are primarily concealed, with some clipped.  The weft moving ends are primarily tucked under, but in some cases concealed.  The weft stitches are sometimes split on the backface.

The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is blunt with eight back stitches.  The weft fag ends are clipped and bound under.  The moving ends are concealed with a few clipped.  A little over half of the stitches are split on the back face.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.

About half of the stitches are split on the back face.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.

The basket has food residue, according to the informant Molly Haynew this basket was used as a sifter.  There are some burns on the interior that might indicate parching.  The basket has a tight spiral start.  The coil foundation is three rod with some splints towards the base.  The wefts are peeled and unpeeled redbud, as well as a black material.  The design is diagonal stacked rectangles on the sides of the basket, as well as a horizontal band at the base. The rim is plain wrapped.  The coil ending is missing, around 3/4 of an inch is gone.  The weft fag ends are primarily clipped with some tucked and a few concealed.  The weft moving ends are concealed, with some clipped.  The workface has a few split stitches; the back face has up to 70% split stitches.  The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction, and a primarily down to the right slant of weft twist.  Due to the small coil width this may be Wailaki.

The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is missing. The weft fag ends are primarily clipped.  The moving ends are primarily concealed, with some clippped.  The weft stitches are around 40% split on the back face.  The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right, and the slant of weft twist is primarily down to the right.
