Black color is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Red color is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). Large, deep, twined. Worn from use. Red overlay coming off. White, red, and black overlay, 2-faced; diagonal sawtooth bands, some containing diamonds; flanked by diagonal rows of triangles. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: 4 cm radius from start, 3 rows begin 5.5 cm out, 2 rows at 8 cm out, 2 rows at 10 cm out, 3 rows at 11.5 cm out, 2 rows at 13 cm out, 1 row at 15 cm out, 2 rows at 17 cm out, 2 rows at 19 cm from start.

Mostly plain weave. 3-strand twining for 1.5 cm radius from start; also approximately 3-3.5 cm from start.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Twined; globular shape.  Dusty.  Wide design band.  White overlay ground, with horizontally striped quadrilaterals stacked in threes.  Black maidenhair fern overlay.  2-faced overlay; top row of basket is 3-strand twining, the next two are twill twined, and the fourth is 3-strand. There are also 4 areas of 3-strand twining on the bottom.

All overlaid except bottom. 2-faced overlay. Diagonally stacked dark quadrilaterals zigzag on white ground. Double white line runs through the center of zigzag. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs for 8 cm radius from start.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). In very good condition.  Almost completely plain twining, overlain with black and white; the "foot" design, in 2-faced overlay. Bottom of basket has concentric rings, white and 3-strand twining alternating. 1 row of 3-strand twining at basket rim.
Hearst Museum object titled Mortar basket, accession number 1-2309, described as Mortar basket; twined. Warp is Willow (Salix), weft is yellow Pine. White pattern is Beargrass (Xerophyllum tenax). Red color is Maidenahir (Adiantum pedatum) dyed in Alder (Alnus rubra). Rim bound with Redbud (Cercis occidentalis). Shows signs of use but in good condition.  2-faced overlay; white band with repeated red and black vertical zigzags; also thin white horizontal stripes and dotted stripes.  Lower third of basket is done in 3-strand twining. A small hoop is latticed- twined to the outside 7.5 cm from the bottom; a hoop is sewn on to form rim at the top, with split redbud shoots.
