Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-61755, described as Round, flat base. Circular triangular design in center area, zigzag designs around rim and base, in black and brown on straw colored ground. Plain twined. Made of white grass and maidenhair fern. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, probably not used. Crossed warp starting knot. Warp material is probably hazel. The weft materials are conifer root, with beargrass overlay background, maidenhair fern and red dyed woodwardia overlay designs. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by plain twining for 1.25 inches, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The designs include, at the base a star/flower shape, followed by several one to three weft wide circles, followed by a horizontal band of zigzags. On the side of the basket are several alternating up and down triangles with smaller triangles along their side. At the rim is a horizontal band with zigzags on the interior. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single sided, on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Diagonal rectangular design in brown and black on straw colored ground, bands of same on base. Plain twined. Made of white grass and maidenhair fern. Tag "NW Cal Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot indented and covered with maidenhair fern. The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is apparently 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by 3 weft rows of plain twining, followed by 2 weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by 3 weft rows three strand twining, followed by 1 1/2 inches of plain twining, followed by 2 weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1/2 inch of parallel warp open work. The rim appears to be comprised of two or more weft rows of twining with reinforcing rods wrapped with beargrass. The main design is a horizontal row of diamonds in woodwardia and maidenhair fern on a beargrass background. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California.
Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-61747, described as Burden basket. Open work twined with band around rim of plain twining, geometric design in straw and brown. Made of peeled willow and white grass. Tag "NW Cal att." Per Ralph Shanks: Openwork twined burden basket with two cloth handles. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp and weft material is probably willow. At the starting knot there is closely spaced plain twining until the edge of the bottom of the basket, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. After that there is widely spaced plain twining contining to the rim, where there is one row of crossed warps. The rim is braided with the warp sticks bound down on the interior of the basket. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket mat/lid, probably made for sale. The basket has a linear crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there are 3 weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until the rim. The design is comprised of a circle of woodwardia surrounded by black lines, followed by two rows of triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is one sided. The rim is trimmed. On the opposite side of the overlay there is a reinforcing rod near the rim. There are hairs woven into the basket.
