- Description:
- Round, flat base. Circular triangular design in center area, zigzag designs around rim and base, in black and brown on straw colored ground. Plain twined. Made of white grass and maidenhair fern. Tag "Klamath R. Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, probably not used. Crossed warp starting knot. Warp material is probably hazel. The weft materials are conifer root, with beargrass overlay background, maidenhair fern and red dyed woodwardia overlay designs. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by plain twining for 1.25 inches, followed by three weft rows of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The designs include, at the base a star/flower shape, followed by several one to three weft wide circles, followed by a horizontal band of zigzags. On the side of the basket are several alternating up and down triangles with smaller triangles along their side. At the rim is a horizontal band with zigzags on the interior. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single sided, on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The basket is from Northwestern California.
