Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-255547, described as Bowl. Twined. Yellow with designs in black and brown including bands and yellow zigzags within two black and brown bands. Hourglass designs in main section with yellow lines running vertically through them. Rim has truncated triangle motif.  Tag "Klamath River Tribes". Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket".    Crossed warp starting knot.  Overlay on the outside.  The warp material is hazel.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass and red-dyed woodwardia fern.  At the starting knot there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that two weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until one inch from the rim, were there is a row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining.   The warp sticks are finely trimmed at the rim.  Starting at the base the designs are bands of alternating tan and black, the main body design is six hourglasses outlined by a band above and below with zigzags in it. Directly below rim are six trapezoids.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface.  Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, possibly Karuk based on the area of collection.

Main design comprises five diagonally stacked trapezoids bisected into rows of triangles by stepped yellow bands. Rim has six trapezoids bisected by yellow bands.  Tag: "Klamath River Tribes", second tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour tray. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is two weft rows of plain twining, followed by seven weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues until the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining, one weft row below the rim.  The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is primarily on the inside.  The rim is trimmed.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the location of the Riddell's family home in Orleans.  There are a few hairs woven into the basket near the rim.  This basket's designs are very similar to 1-255553.

Main design comprises five diagonally stacked trapezoids bisected into rows of triangles by stepped yellow bands. Rim has seven trapezoids bisected by yellow bands. Two tags: "Klamath River Tribes", one tag "Klamath River Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour/ sifting tray. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is .45 inch three strand twining, followed by 2.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one  weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues until 1 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining, plain twining continues to the rim.  The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is primarily on the inside.  The rim is trimmed.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the location of the Riddell's family home in Orleans.  There are a few hairs woven into the basket near the rim.  This basket's designs are very similar to 1-255554.
