Tray. Round, twined. Yellow with various bands of brown and black: two sawtooth, two with inset yellow triangles. Main design comprises five diagonally stacked trapezoids bisected into rows of triangles by stepped yellow bands. Rim has seven trapezoids bisected by yellow bands. Two tags: "Klamath River Tribes", one tag "Klamath River Tribes Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour/ sifting tray. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. At the starting knot there is .45 inch three strand twining, followed by 2.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues until 1 inch below the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining, plain twining continues to the rim. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily on the inside. The rim is trimmed. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Karuk based on the location of the Riddell's family home in Orleans. There are a few hairs woven into the basket near the rim. This basket's designs are very similar to 1-255554.
