Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-61746, described as Burden basket, open work twine.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined open-work burden basket. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is possibly hazel or willow.  There are three handles made out of old cloth.  Starting at the starting knot, there is close-spaced plain twining, often over two warps during the first few inches, followed by open-work plain twining with parallel warps.  Plain twining continues to the rim, where the warps are braided and bound down on the interior.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven into the side of the basket.

Made of peeled willow and white grass.  Tag "NW Cal att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Openwork twined burden basket with two cloth handles.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp and weft material is probably willow.  At the starting knot there is closely spaced plain twining until the edge of the bottom of the basket, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  After that there is widely spaced plain twining contining to the rim, where there is one row of crossed warps.  The rim is braided with the warp sticks bound down on the interior of the basket.   The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The basket is from Northwestern California.
