Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23552a,b, described as The deep-pink glaze leaves two lobed panels in reserve. One contains a hand-painted red bird on a pine branch, the other has hand-painted peony blossoms. The pink-ground is incised with a design that continues on the lid. Fu-mei Williams told me that her former mother-in-law had a complete set of this ware when she left China in 1942.

Blue bowstrings around rim and foot. Lid has blue bowstring around edge and four-character printed decal inscription in brown. Inscription: Lid: Long live peace. (和平万岁 heping wansui). Back of mug: Guard our motherland. (保卫我們的祖国 baowei women de zuguo).

A snowy pine branch decorates the lid. Shop keeper told me (Freda) that it is a recent revival of an early 1980s potter who copied a famous snow-scene ceramic painter of the 1950s.

On the lower right a small square red seal reads 安源 Anyuan, the coal and steel town on he Jiangxi-Hunan boarder made famous by a labor strike in 1922, and celebrated in Liu Chunhua’s 1967 painting Mao goes to Anyuan (although Mao apparently never visited the coal mines and was not there in 1922). Lid identical to CM39. Inscription: On foot: “Made in Jingdezhen, China” (中国景德鎮 Zhongguo Jingdezhen)
Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23481a,b, described as Hand-potted. Painted with a snow landscape in color. Two figures stand on the bank near a mansion, across the water there are distant mountains. The characters at the top left of the image may read “made by son of Jin Fan”: (?金樊子作 ?Jin Fanzi zuo). On the lid seven characters are written in a continuous circle in a style reminiscent of inscriptions on ancient bronze vessels: “[on this] day made auspicious treasure for use” (日作吉祥之宝用Ri zuo jxiang zhi bao yong). Inscription: On the back: “Snow renews the landscape and brings inspiration for poems. Imitating the method of Liuru [Ming dynasty painter Tang Yin], Xie Lin Faxiang wrote in Jingdezhen” (雪能增诗興 山河景换新 仿六如之法 谢林发祥写于景镇市 xue neng zeng shi xing, shanhe jing huan xin. Fang Liuru zhi fa, Xie Lin Faxiang xieyu Jingzhen shi). A small red seal follows. Slightly illegible kiln mark seems to be the name of the painter: “Xie Lin Faxiang of Jiangxi” (江西谢林发祥 Jiangxi Xie Lin Faxiang).
Hearst Museum object titled Mug and lid, accession number 9-23498a,b, described as The mug is decorated with a decal of an opened book resting on pine branches and radiating light, topped by the slogan: Serve the people (为人民服務 wei renmin fuwu) in imitation of Mao’s calligraphic script. The lid is almost flat with a round knob, a design that is typical of the mugs that Liling made for the CCP leaders and the Great Hall of the People; it bears an inscription. Inscription: Lid: “Smash the [four] olds; establish the [four] news” (破旧立新 pojiu lixin). For history of slogan see Helen Wang, Chairman Mao Badges, p. 143. Blue circular kiln mark on foot: “New Life Ceramic factory, Liling 1968” (醴陵新生瓷厂 Liling xinsheng cichang 1968)

Spray painted with a red flower, probably a peony, lush leaves and a budding branch against a full moon. Lid has a five-pointed star, delineated by red spray paint. Inscription: On both body and lid: “Mutual assistance and cooperation” (互助合作 huzhu hezuo). Kiln mark: “Liling Ceramic Painting Workers” (醴陵陶畫工人 Liling taohua gongren, last line illegible but seems to be “cooperative”合作社 hezuoshe)
