Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12615a-c, described as Tea jar: ceramic.  Globular jar with flat bottom, very short narrow neck, and two small handles applied near neck.  Turned ivory lid (b) and ragged silk bag (c) with silk cord drawstring.  Interior and exterior of jar has a thick, glossy dark brown to amber glaze with dull greenish flambe towards bottom.  Bottom and side up half way to belly is unglazed showing brown body.  Lid has short knob in center.  Underside had gilded paper, much of which has worn off.  Bag (c) is embroidered and striped green of various shades of green.  Cord is gold.  This vase is possibly an example of Shunkei cha-ire from the Seto kilns which are characterized by a metallic looking dark amber or dark brown colored glaze and have four small handles set close to neck.  Named after the original maker, Shunkei.
Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12315, described as water jar, ceramic.  large bulging jar w/ wide mouth, short concave neck and a rather narrow foot.  slightly flared rim.  interior has a lightlcoated [sic] band of glaze near top.  exterior has bolk, stylized design of pine trees in copper greens and light & dark brown.  dark brown slip or glaze at base.  rim very worn.  many small bloats, chips in side.  UCDA cat. includes not:  "Extremely valuable".  H. 32 cm.  rim Dia. 29 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12261, described as jar, ceramic;  for holding salt.  squat form w/ bulging midriff;  short slightly narrower, neck, w/ turned out lip.  short foot.  lip and neck have glossy yellow-brown glaze which meets a blue-white opaque color at the slight shoulder.  blue-green zig-zag design around the midriff.  Interior has a matted brown glaze.  the clay body is buff colored w/ a gray slip applied over it.  foot is nicked.  H. 10 cm.  mouth dia. 10.5 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Jar, accession number 9-12262, described as Jar, ceramic, for holding salt, squat shape with slight shoulder, bulging midriff, short straight narrower neck and turned out squared lip, glossy brown glaze runs over most of the body exposing a blue-white opaque color at the base, blue-green zig zag brush strokes on midriff have been nearly obliterated by runniness resulting in brilliant spots of blue, crackled throughout, brown interior, buff clay body with gray slip applied over it. Red and gold mottled enamel with flying white cranes and clouds outlined.  Shoulder, base and lid ornamented with overlapping, lacy scallops in black, gold, brown, yellow, green and red.  Copper shows at rim and base.  Lid has copper knob. Paper label inside "b" is incorrect. handwritten number is correct. 5/31/12, AT.
