Tea jar: ceramic. Globular jar with flat bottom, very short narrow neck, and two small handles applied near neck. Turned ivory lid (b) and ragged silk bag (c) with silk cord drawstring. Interior and exterior of jar has a thick, glossy dark brown to amber glaze with dull greenish flambe towards bottom. Bottom and side up half way to belly is unglazed showing brown body. Lid has short knob in center. Underside had gilded paper, much of which has worn off. Bag (c) is embroidered and striped green of various shades of green. Cord is gold. This vase is possibly an example of Shunkei cha-ire from the Seto kilns which are characterized by a metallic looking dark amber or dark brown colored glaze and have four small handles set close to neck. Named after the original maker, Shunkei.
