Image Missing: Hearst Museum object titled Mug with lid, museum number 9-23899a,b, described as Enamel mug with lid. Pink pigment was sprayed around the top edge and pale yellow on the body. The red inscription reads “Memento for winners of the city-wide competition among Shanghai industrial enamel factories, 4th quarter 1956 (上海市搪瓷业廠际竟賽优胜紀念 Shanghai shi tangci yechang ji jingsai yousheng jinian). In the center of the red inscription is a decorative character “Prize” (獎jiang) within a five-pointed star. The legend below reads “Presented by State-private cooperative Huafeng Enamel Factory” (公私合营华丰搪瓷廠曾 gongsi heying Huafeng tangci chang zeng). The characters are a mix of simplified and full-form which is appropriate to the year 1956 when simplified characters were being introduced to promote literacy. Note that the character for competition (賽) is written in a simplified form (roof radical over west西) that was later withdrawn. (Cf. Lanzhou washbasin with the same simplified character.) Brown enamel decorates the rim and the handle. The edge of the lid is sprayed with creamy yellow. Acquisition Data: Baoguosi, Mr. Zheng 郑, with Michael Nylan. RMB 200. 2007-09-20. Lent to Charles B.
