R. att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Woman’s twined basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red-dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to ½ inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is beargrass. Starting at the starting knot there is a third an inch of conifer root with no overlay. A star/flower pattern is formed by triangles at the start. A band of triangles follows a band of beargrass. The main design is formed by pairs of stacked parallelograms and triangles. This followed by another band of triangles. At the rim there are three sets of triangles and rectangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is only on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-235243, described as Twined basketry. Major design band is dark brown triangles with vertical straw - colored columns projecting. Alternate triangles face in opposite direction.  Tag "Kl. R. Tr. att.".  There is a swastika in ink on the interior of the cap as well as "IL" also in ink. Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, wrapped with maidenhair fern.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel. The weft material is conifer root, which is also the design background.  The weft overlay design is maidenhair fern, red-dyed woodwardia, and beargrass. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is a horizontal band of alternating direction maidenhair fern triangles outlined by smaller beargrass triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  There are several hairs woven into the basket.

Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 3/4 inch, followed by 2 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is comprised of six alternating triangles with three checkered lines on either side.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.

After that is a horizontal band of maidenhair fern, followed by a band of red dyed woodwardia triangles, followed by a band of conifer root, followed by a band of maidenhair fern.  The main design band has six clusters of six triangles in maidenhair fern and red dyed woodwardia.  That is followed by one band of maidenhair fern, followed by a band of red dyed woodwardia.  The last design band has five clusters of two triangles and a parallelogram.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

On the exterior, the weft overlay background is red-dyed woodwardia with designs in beargrass and maidenhair fern.  On the interior there are overlay bands of beargrass, located where the two rows of three strand twining is on the exterior.  Also on the interior there is a band of red-dyed woodwardia.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is a horizontal band of zigzags.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the main design on the exterior and a minor, yet completely different, design on the interior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  There are two hairs woven into the basket.
