Twined basketry with triangular designs. Tag: "Klamath River Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root. On the exterior, the weft overlay background is red-dyed woodwardia with designs in beargrass and maidenhair fern. On the interior there are overlay bands of beargrass, located where the two rows of three strand twining is on the exterior. Also on the interior there is a band of red-dyed woodwardia. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is a horizontal band of zigzags. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the main design on the exterior and a minor, yet completely different, design on the interior. The basket is from Northwestern California. There are two hairs woven into the basket.
