The weft overlay background is beargrass, with designs in maidenhair fern.  The basket has a crossed warp starting knot covered with beargrass.  The basket is plain twined.  The rim is trimmed.  The design is two rows of alternating beargrass and maidenhair fern.  The basket as an up to the right slant of weft twist, an exterior workface, and a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
Hearst Museum object titled Basketry cap, accession number 1-67266, described as Basket cap.  Almost completely overlaid; red on white ground.  Design includes light and dark triangles.  Mostly plain-twined.  Tag "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is red-dyed woodwardia with maidenhair fern and beargrass designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .25 inch, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim, where there is one weft row of lattice twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three of elements made up of two sets of two stacked triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided with some overlay on the backface, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Wiyot based on this basket's association with 1-67265.  There is a hair woven into the basket.

The main design is three sets of diagonals with a zigzag on the interior and diagonally stacked maidenhair fern triangles on either side.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  The black designs on a beargrass background are consistent with Yurok weaving, but not exclusive to that area.

Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three sets of five diagonally stacked woodwardia and maidenhair rectangles with triangles on either side.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There are two light hairs woven into the top exterior of the hat.

Triangular design in red - brown and black on glossy yellowish white field. Small break in one area of edge.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Woman’s twined hat.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow.  The background wefts are conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining.  After that, there is one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is another weft row of three strand twining.  After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed.  The design background overlay is beargrass.   The design at the start is formed by an encircling row of maidenhair fern, surrounded by a circle of woodwardia triangles.  A second design follows that with overlay over the three strand twining with triangles of woodwardia outlined by maidenhair fern below it.  The main design is comprised of a maidenhair band with repeating elements comprised of three triangles and a diamond.  The design above the rim is a repeat of the three strand twining with overlay and a band of triangles above it.  At the rim are four sets of two triangles.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction.  The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side.  The basket is from Northwestern California.
