Hearst Museum object titled Tzute, accession number 3-29959, described as Backstrap-loomed, warp-predominant plain weave; two-faced supp. weft brocading; two  pieces joined with randa; one end loom-finished, other end warps cut and hand-hemmed. 11" tassels added to all four corners. 96.5 cm x 96.5 cm. Native name/meaning: Tzute, hombre/Man's headcloth. Materials, techniques: Cotton: 2 two-ply black, blue and 4 two-ply black; mercerzied cotton in 5 two-ply in multicolors. Iconography consists of animals, abstracted double eagles, in geometrics. Context of use: Donated by Brian Tapp in memory of Rodolfo Alvarez Farfan. Zigzag patterns are an abstract rendering of the double-headed eagle design (Schevill); handsome tassels at four corners begin with yellow around which is an aqua puffed ring; the yellow is then knotted to maroon cotton, the dominant color of the tassel. The tassels are each knotted towards the bottom.

Geometric zig-zag motifs. Called “Tzute.” Dark blue background with white vertical stripes, red and yellow warps as accent on either side of randa, hemming done in a zigzag pattern with silk floss. Purple and lavender yarn, overall square-shaped in appearance. Made of singles cotton in white, dk. blue (indigo), red and yellow.

Central randa is embroidered in sections of tan, black and red and warp faced stripes in brown, black, red, white with fine orange warp stripes. Some of the thin black stripes have white ikat. Three selvages are finished and the fourth is rolled and hand sewn.

Backstrap loomed, warp-faced plain weave, single faced supplementary weft brocading, one piece. Warps cut and uncut, creating a 7 inch fringe on each end. Most of surface covered with supplementary weft brocading, one corner has approximately 7 knots at point where weaving end and fringe begins, some fringe appears to have possibly been braided. Iconography consists of geometric and abstract designs, birds and animal figures. Cotton, 2 two-ply in red, green, navy, pink, white, maroon, turquoise, brown, dk. and lt. yellow. Cotton 6 two-ply red, turquoise. Cotton 2, 3, 4, 6 two-ply dark green, pink, brick, red, white, navy, black, light and dark yellow, rayon or silk 4 two-ply fuchsia and orange. Good condition: side selvedges fraying, yarns coming loose - noted 1991.

Context of use: German red background with yellow vertical stripe with green and purple warps worked in as accents on either side of randa; brocading on single side and hemmed on one side in wrapped stitch; over all appearance is a rectangular shape.
