Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-9951, described as Cooking basket; coiled. Warp is Willow (Salix), weft is Pine (Pinus). Black pattern is Brake fern (Pteris quilina). Decoration: black rectangular designs in bracken fern root. 3-rod coiling with stitches split on interior face. Bottom has worn through, as has rim in 2 places.

Red pattern is Chain fern (Woodwardia spinulosa) in alder (Alnus rubra). Similar (to 1-16564?); smaller; "(small deep, narrow at top)" added in pen. Very grimy from use. Globose shape. Horizontal dotted and solid stripes. White and red overlay, 2-faced, on brown. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twining occurs: approximately 2 cm out from start; 1 row approximately 4 cm from start; top 2 rows, forming a rim.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Similar (to 1-16565?); smaller, with semi-circular design; "(small, deep, narrow at top)" added in pen. Globular shape; twined. Very grimy from use. 2-faced overlay, diagonal bands of black and white. 3-strand twining: top row, also 3 areas on bottom. The rest is plain twined.

Mush boiler; "(large, deep, twined)" added in pen. Bottom and inside extremely grimy from use. 2-faced white overlay. Serrated horizontal zigzag band. Plain twined except for 2 cm radius at start.

Dirty and worn from usage. Cylindrical shape. Very flexible. White 2-faced overlay designs; two thin stripes at top; horizontal bands, two of connected triangles and two of connected diamonds; with a repeating angled motif between the 2 band areas. Mostly plain twined. 3-strand twined for approximately 9 cm radius from start, and two rows at approximately 12 cm from start.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Very old; "(large, deep, twined)" added in pen. Extremely grimy and worn. One large horizontal break, mended with cotton twine. Break in rim. Black and white 2-faced overlay design. Stepped diagonal zigzag motif, with V-shaped motifs above. These are horizontally striped in black and brown. 3-strand twining occurs on the bottom.

Black dye is Maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum). Twined; globular shape. Dusty. Wide design band. White overlay ground, with horizontally striped quadrilaterals stacked in threes. Black maidenhair fern overlay. 2-faced overlay; top row of basket is 3-strand twining, the next two are twill twined, and the fourth is 3-strand. There are also 4 areas of 3-strand twining on the bottom.

Mended with Willow. Mush boiler; "(large deep twined)" added in pen. Extremely grimy and worn from use; 1 small hole in bottom, 1 mend on rim. White 2-faced overlay. 2 white stripes at top. Below, an all- over pattern of diagonal zigzags. Plain twined, except for 3-strand twining at 4 cm radius from start and 5.5 - 7 cm from start.
