Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-12585, described as Saucer, lacquer: circular; very shallow; short narrow foot. Red-orange ground on both upper and lower sides' Decoration on upper depicts a rooster perched upon a thatched roof, surrounded by flood (?) with tree tops in background of bamboo and a twisted pine (?). The design is in slight relief sprinkled gold (hiramakie) with black detail. Shading by graduated sprinkling. Inlaid squares of gold on pine needles (or shrubbery?). Larger sheet of gold foil inlaid at end of roof. Black undercoat shows through in several places; upper surface dull; underside gloss. Height 2.3 cm; Diameter 10.2 cm. Probably once one set of three wine cups, of graduating diameters, used in marriage (and other ) ceremonies and are called Sakazuki. At the wedding, the bride and groom observe the ceremony on san-san-kudo (three threes are nine), when they sip three times out of each of the three sake cups by which they pledge their marriage vows. According to Japanese belief, three means good luck, thus san-san-kudo signifies wish for a happy union.

Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-12586, described as Bowl, lacquer, with wood base: half-sphere shape, small foot. Interior elaborately decorated depicting the reflection(?) of a tree in water, with willow branches hanging down. The tree trunk is in high relief with a very textured surface. The surface is covered greatly by inlaid gold foil, the rest sprinkled with fold filings and grainy dark particles (sabi?). The water: graduated sprinkling of gold in stylized lines. Red, smooth glossy ground. Rim is gold. 2 small characters and seal near trunk. Lower side is rough. High relief; cursive characters on other side in gold (taka-maki); Height 5 cm; Diameter 15.5 cm.

Context of use: Made by mother or sister of man, who wants to marry who gives it to his bride. Put camel milk inside and place it on roof of house for 4 days. On 5th day slaughter goat-pour milk in front of house and say prayers. Description: Cup- woven basket cone shape, hardened with charcoal and dirt. Located in barrl. L=19 cm. W=18 cm.
