Lower half of basket: bands of vertical and diagonal stripes. Upper half: parallel rows of vertically zigzagging parallelograms.

Tags:  9.Mission [crossed out] Grass coil sumac Juncas" on back side "South Calie".  Tag stapled "4 [over] P".  Sticky tag "#9 [over] 20:0". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled burden/storage basket.  Deergrass bundle foundation.  Weft designs are black dyed juncus. The background wefts are sumac.  The design is one horizontal row of black outlined diamonds inside a line at the top and bottom.  It has an interior workface with a rightward work direction.  The weft fag ends are bound under.  The rim is plain wrapped with a herringbone ending, with a little damage at the end.  Based on the techniques and materials this basket is from Southwestern California.

Hearst Museum object titled Storage basket, accession number 1-11983, described as Coiled basket of truncated cone form.  Design in triangles vertically arranged.  Tag "Yuki".   Per Ralph Shanks:  Broad coiled bowl, in the shape of cooking basket.  There is food debris and some burns on the interior.  The basket has a twined start.  The coil foundation includes redbud rods and splints.  The weft designs are in unpeeled redbud and the design background is in peeled redbud.  The design includes four vertical bands of four stacked triangles, pointing to the rim of the basket.  At the rim and at the base there is another band of triangles pointing towards each other.  There is a small random rectangle.  The rim is plain wrapped.  The primary design continues to the rim.  The rim coil ending is very slightly tapered, with about three back stitches.  The rim has a larger diameter coil than the rest of the basket.  The weft fag ends are bound under; the weft moving ends are concealed.  About 50% of the wefts are split on the interior, less than 10% are split on the exterior.  The wefts are non-interlocking.  The basket has an exterior workface.  It has a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.

There are no abrasions or food residue. The basket has a coiled start.  The coil foundation is three rod peeled shoots.  The wefts are peeled redbud background with unpeeled redbud designs.  The design includes diagonal crossed lines.  There are no random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is slightly tapered and has 13 diagonal back stitches. The weft fag ends are bound under, clipped, or concealed.  The weft moving ends are bound under or concealed.  The exterior of the basket has a few split stiches; the interior has a majority of split stiches.  The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.  The maker, Lizzie Sain, was half-Yuki half-Wailaki.  The basket has features that include both Yuki and Wailaki techniques and materials.  The lack of a presence of random design rectangles makes this more similar to a Wailaki made basket.
