The rattan is in the form in which it is brought back from the forest. Leaves were stripped from canes at collection site. (a) Is “rotan tunggai” (calamus penicillatus, Roxb.). Coiled 48 cm. circumferance. (b) Is not identified as to type. Coiled 128 cm. circumferance.

Length 42 cm. (b) Scabbard. Scabbard is still new. Length 36 cm. Width 7.5 cm. General work knife, chopping wood, cleaning, light digging. Carried whenever leaving house area. Handle and scabbard made locally by men. Blade obtained from Chinese blacksmiths. Used by anybody. This specimen nearly worn out but still in use at time of acquisition. Cost in U.S. dollars: 1.88.

Cord tied to secure anchorage. Trap thrown into deep water (6-20 feet) to rest on bottom, sometimes necessary to weight with stones. Baited with coconut, manioc, or starchy roots. Nylon cord purchases in markets. Made by men only. The most popular trap in use today, can be manufactured by most adult males. Other kinds of bamboo are suitable for construction, by make less durable traps. Second quality bamboo is “aur perin.” Cost in U.S. dollars: 2.50. Length 1.10 m. Diameter 34 cm.

Context of use: Used to catch prawns primarily, also fish. Set in any water 2-3 feet deep, wings built at mouth. Used by men. This trap is made in the style of the Jerantut Malay, a group living about 80 miles upriver. The maker of this trap lived in Jerantut for about 20 years before moving to Pesagi.
