A farm commune with tractor working a field is framed with green flowers and cumulus clouds. Above in red-outlined characters is the slogan “People’s Commune is good” (人民公社好 renmin gongshe hao). A bouquet of farm crops – wheat, sorghum, corn, cotton – is graced with the character “abundant” (丰 feng). Inscription: Red circular kiln’s mark on foot, “Product of Zi River ceramic factory, Yiyang” (益陽資江瓷厂出品 Yiyang zijiang cichang chupin) Place of Origin: Yiyang, Hunan Province Condition: Good, Signs of wear Acquisition Data: Panjiayuan. Image portrays two women sitting by a paddy field, each holding a book (presumably Quotations from Mao Zedong). The woman on the right, wearing clothes of a laborer, points with her right hand, seemingly instructing the woman on the left, a student by appearance. Inscription: Front: “Read Chairman Mao’s books, listen to Chairman Mao’s words” (读毛主席的书 听毛主席的话 du Mao zhuxi de shu, ting Mao zhuxi de hua), followed by a seal. Reverse: “Quotation from Chairman Mao: Be resolute, fear no sacrifice, and surmount every difficulty to win victory” (毛主席语录 下定决心。不怕牺牲。排除万难。去争取胜利。 Mao zhuxi yulu: Xia ding juexin. Bu pa xisheng. Paichu wan nan. Qu zhengqu shengli).  Kiln mark: Produced by Zi River porcelain factory, Yiyang (益陽資江瓷厂出品 Yiyang Zijiang cichang chupin). A character (和 he) on the interior of the bowl. Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-23615, described as Materials: Glazed porcelain Diameter at rim: 16 cm  Date: 1968    Country: People’s Republic of China   Description: The body is decorated with CCP’s symbol in a five-pointed star, on its left there is a slogan above a scene of factory buildings with chimneys, the slogan reads: Make it your principle to fight selfishness, denounce Revisionism (以斗私、批修为綱 yi dousi、pixiu wei gang). On the right there is a stripe of wheat pattern above a slogan reading: Grasp revolution, Promote production (抓革命促生产zhua geming cu shengchan). Contents in Quotation from Mao Zedong framed by a wheat garland, concluded with: Carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through to the end (要把无产阶级文化大革命进行到底 yao ba wuchan jieji wenhua dageming jinxing daodi).  Inscription: Kiln mark: “Zi River porcelain factory, Hunan 1968” (湖南資江瓷厂Hunan Zijiang cichang 1968). Interior of bowl has a character (钦qin). Place of Origin: Yiyang, Hunan Province. Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-23617, described as Materials: Glazed porcelain Diameter at rim: 17.3 cm Date: 1968 Country: People’s Republic of China Description: Two alternating decals, each appearing twice, with touches of hand applied color. One portrays in red two men and one woman in front of a luminous setting, reading presumably, Mao Zedong’s thought. A slogan, reading: Revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought (干革命靠毛泽东思想 gan geming kao Mao Zedong sixiang), appears in the front with a yellow sunflower on each side. The other pattern portrays a purple steamboat on a blue sea amid waves. Above there is a slogan in purple that reads: “Sailing on the high seas depends on the helmsman” (大海航行靠舵手dahai hangxing kao duoshou). One decal in red shows a woman driving a tractor that has a red flag and a slogan reading: Support Industry (支援工业zhiyuan gongyi). The tractor carries a full load. The other pattern in green shows a sunflower. Interior has red fish alternating with green water grass. Inscription: Kiln mark: “Zi River porcelain factory, Hunan, 1967” (湖南 资江瓷厂Hunan Zijiang cichang 1967). The house carries a stylized bundle of wheat; the character “abundant” (丰feng) is on the saddle blanket. The horse alternates with a cluster of symbols of worker, peasant, soldier alliance above which is an inscription reading: Communism is good (社会主义好 shehui zhuyi hao); the interior embossed with two characters. Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 9-23622, described as A decal shows a girl with the Little Red Book raised in her right hand and a hoe in her left. She stands by a wheat field. A rising sun on the left. Sent-down Youth movement. Inscribed on back. Inscription: Seemingly handwritten on reverse: “The countryside is a vast world where much can be accomplished” (农村是一个广阔的天地 nongcun shi yige guangkuo de tiandi). Kiln mark: “Zi River porcelain factory, Hunan 1970” (湖南資江瓷厂1970 Hunan Zijiang cichang 1970). An illegible character embossed in bowl.
Hearst Museum object titled Rice bowl, accession number 9-23581, described as Entry: No. CB33 Object Name: Rice bowl Materials: Glazed porcelain Diameter at rim: 11.5 cm Date: 1968 - 1976  Country: People’s Republic of China   Description: The exterior features light-radiating books by Mao and the inscription “Serve the people” (为人民服务 wei renmin fuwu) in red. The three often read articles are poised in front of a rising sun and above shafts of wheat. The inscription: “Actively study and use Chairman Mao’s works” (活学活用毛主席著作 huoxue huoyong Mao zhuxi zhuzuo) in purple. The motifs are repeated on the reverse. The interior is embossed with bird and flower motif.
