Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-12098, described as Cylindrical twined cooking basket with hoop at border.  White two-faced overlay, 3 horizontal stripes, top band of horizontal triangles.  3-strand twining 3.5 cm radius from start; also 2 top rows.  The third and fourth rows from rim are lattice-twined. Dirty from usage, one "bite" out of rim.  "Cnecs". per catalog card.  Tag:  "1-12098a", two tags have "Wailaki".   Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking pot, used.  The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, slightly oval, with the warps at a non-perpendicular angle.  The weft is confer root with an overlay of beargrass, and peeled shoot warps.  The basket has a rightward work direction with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket mildly undulates.  The fact the basket is twined and has lattice twining at the rim reinforces the claim that this is a Wailaki cooking pot, as Yuki made coiled cooking baskets.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Wide brimmed coiled cooking basket.  There is some residue on the bottom interior as well as abrasions and two burns on the interior wefts.  The starting knot is twined and sewn over.  The coil foundation is peeled redbud shoot rods and splints.  The weft background is peeled redbud and the weft design is unpeeled redbud.  The design is five sets of three horizontal bands of redbud with a break in the design that lines up.  There are three unique designs at the breaks, including an area of checkering, near the rim.  There are no random rectangles, which is unusual for a Yuki basket. The rim is entirely in unpeeled redbud.  The coil ending is blunt with three diagonal overstitches. The weft fag ends are bound under.  The weft moving ends are concealed.  The weft stiches on the exterior are less than 5% split.  The weft stiches on the interior are more than 50% split.  The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled flaring basket bowl, with widely spaced wefts.  The basket has some food residue but no signs of cooking; it is possibly a serving bowl.  The basket has a knotted start.  The coil foundation is three rods of peeled shoots with some splints.  The wefts are peeled redbud with unpeeled redbud designs.  The design is horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud.  There is one random rectangle. The rim is plain wrapped and the coil ending is slightly tapered with three diagonal backstitches.  The rim is sliced by someone after it entered in the museum. The weft fag ends are primarily bound under.  The weft moving ends are primarily bound under.  The exterior has below 5% split stiches.  The interior of the basket has below 20% split stiches.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.
Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-759, described as In good condition but dusty, shows signs of use.  A large, wide and shallow shape.  Two- faced overlay designs; 2 bands of connected diamonds, running horizontally, a dotted stripe below; white overlay material.  Predominantly plain twining.  3-strand twining from basket start 7 cm radius, large stitches; 2 more rows at 9 cm from start; 2 rows at basket rim.  Two tags:  "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl, lightly used, with no apparent food residue.  The basket has a crossed warp start, indented, non-perpendicular.  The warps are a peeled shoot.  The weft material is conifer root, with a beargrass design overlay.  From the starting knot there are 1 1/2 inches of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, plain twining continues to the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed, with the majority of the warp sticks extending above the rim. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right of slant of weft twist.  The basket has an exterior workface.  The weft overlay is primarily on the exterior, with some irregularly on the interior.  The basket has some undulation.
