Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-11931, described as Very old, much worn parching basket. Bottom mended with the side of a Wailaki burden basket. Tag: "Yuki" Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled parching basket with base patched with twined basket fragment which is lashed on with leather. The basket has food debris. The warps are rods. The basket appears to have peeled redbud background wefts and unpeeled redbud design wefts. The design is four horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud. The rim is missing. The basket has an exterior workface. There are a few split stitches on the backface. The weft fag and moving ends are bound under or concealed. The basket has a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The twined patch at the base has an up to the right slant of weft twist. It has peeled shoot warps and probably conifer root wefts. The main basket and patch are most likely Wailaki per Samuel Barrett's field notes and because of the lack of random unpeeled redbud rectangles.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-11899, described as Very old hemispherical parching basket with mended bottom. Tags: "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled cooking pot or parching basket. Used, with food debris. The base is a mend and is a separate basket. The start is a tight spiral start, with some stitch mends over it. The coil foundation for both baskets is splint and rods. The mended base appears to be in peeled shoot/ perhaps willow with unpeeled shoot/willow stitching the two baskets together. The main basket wefts are unpeeled and peeled redbud. The design includes horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud, three bands with 3 to 5 rows each; all with a break in each row that lines up with the other rows. There are random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped, the rim ending is missing. The basket has an exterior workface. The weft fag ends are bound under or clipped; the interior moving ends are not visible. The basket has a rightward work direction, with a down to the right of slant weft twist.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-11985, described as Old hemispherical parching basket. Tag "Yuki". Second tag "40-B". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled low broad parching basket. Used, with food debris and burns. There are some native repairs. The start is a pinhole start. The coil foundation is peeled shoot splints surrounding one to two rods. The basket wefts are unpeeled and peeled redbud, the redbud on the rim is a darker color. The design includes two horizontal bands, with five rows of redbud each. There is a break in the design at the same space in each band. There are random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped, with peeled and unpeeled redbud. The rim ending is missing for about three inches. The basket has an exterior workface. The weft fag ends are concealed; the interior moving ends are concealed. There are about 40% split wefts on the interior, with less than 5% split on the exterior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with a down to the right of slant weft twist. The basket has definite Yuki techniques and materials.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-12018, described as Very old hemispherical parching basket. Tag: "Yuki" Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled parching basket that has had broken bottom replaced with coiled patch. The basket has food debris. The start on the patch is a flaring coil over splints. The patch has mostly splits with only a few rods and widely spaced wefts. The warps on the rest of the basket are rods and splints. The basket has peeled redbud background wefts and unpeeled redbud design wefts. The design is four horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud that have a break at the same area of the band. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is missing. The basket and patch have an exterior workface. There are many split stitches on the backface. On the patch the weft fag ends are bound under, with the moving ends concealed. On the basket the weft fag ends are sometimes trimmed or concealed, but are most often bound under. The basket moving ends are difficult to see, but some are concealed and some are bound under. The basket and patch have a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. The work direction, materials and techniques used in the basket are consistent with Wailaki manufacture, especially considering the lack of random unpeeled redbud design rectangles.
Hearst Museum object titled Parching basket, accession number 1-11933, described as Very old large hemispherical parching basket. Tag: "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled parching basket. The basket has food debris. The basket start is twined. The warps are rod and splint. The basket has peeled redbud background wefts and unpeeled redbud design wefts. The design is four horizontal bands of unpeeled redbud as well as many random unpeeled redbud rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped; the rim coil ending is missing. The basket has an exterior workface. There are some split stitches on the backface. The weft fag ends are primarily bound under and the moving ends are difficult to see but are either bound under or concealed. The basket has a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist. Samuel Barrett's informants say this basket is Wailaki.
