Many tigers were successfully photographed due to the highly organized system by which His Highness conducted the tiger beats, After these tiger hunts there were dances by the villagers, celebrating the killing of the tigers, and the photograph shows the camera crew preparing to film the orchestra at one of these tiger dances." Hoefler's original description: "Gwalior State, Central India. Throughout India, along its highways and byways, are shrines, erected to different gods. The traveler soon becomes accustomed to seeing, on every hand, the images of the monkey god, the elephant god and numerous others. The picture shows two small shrines erected to the monkey god, Hanuman, who enjoys a wide following over the whole of India. Images of Hanuman are to be found in most temples, as well as in public places. In those provinces where there are many followers of Vishnu, a person can scarcely move a yard without coming across an image of this beloved god.

Hoefler's original description: "Bhopal State, Central India. This young lady was considered very good and won first place in the dance marathon by popular applause. The masked dancer who opposed her was really very much better, but when it turned out that it was a man, great excitement and laughter ensued, followed by the awarding of the first prize to this smiling artist from the village of Kheri. The young man with the long drum was without doubt the star performer of the entire show, his drumming and dancing being really exceptional.

Hoefler's original description: "Bhopal State, Central India. The Tiger Camp called Dewatya. His Highness The Nawab of Bhopal believes in efficiency and comfort. This Camp was established in the tiger jungles in order that the Hoefler party might properly film the big striped cats of India, and to this Camp were invited many distinguished guests, including Lady Sykes, wife of the Governor of Bombay Presidency. Many delightful days were spent in this place and several tigers fell to the guns of the hunters, all of them affording material for the pictures, just prior to or after their demise.

It is hard for a person from the West to appreciate the primitive dancing of this particular district, but there is one thing to say in their favor and that is that there is plenty of action. The orchestra gets steamed up to a high pitch, and its members do almost as much dancing and jumping about as the main performers.

Hoefler's original description: "Bhopal State, Central India. Paying off the beaters after a tiger hunt. In many states the beaters are forced to endanger their lives and work hard all day for nothing, merely for the privilege of being of service to their Ruler. His Highness of Bhopal, however, insists on paying all of his subjects who answer his call for tiger beaters. They are given a rupee each, whether they work an hour or six hours, and this is really high pay as compared to other remunerations for like services in India.

The Sas Bahu, or Mother-in-law Temple, which stands on top of the flat mountain in Gwalior. Photograph shows Paul L. Hoefler, to the right, and his brother Dudley inspecting some of the wonderful carvings for which this Temple is noted. The amount of work expended in the building of this edifice and the smaller Daughter-in-law Temple, which stands close by, would be hard to calculate, but those who labored, did so with religious fervor, because these temples were dedicated to Vishnu, one of the Trinity worshipped by the Hindus."

On foot, on horseback, by motor car and in bullock carts, the citizens of Bhopal came flocking from all directions in the early morning toward the huge Mosque where early prayers are said. A Mohammedan is exceedingly faithful to his religious beliefs and early hours do not prevent him from attending services.

Gwalior has a department of archeology, officials of which are going to great pains in collecting and preserving the antiquities of the State."
