The composition duplicates that of a well-known statue, the so-called Antinoos (better Hermes) of the Belvedere, Vatican Museum, Rome.

From a statue of probably Parian marble discovered at Athiki (ancient Tenea) of the Isthmos of Corinth in 1846. Roya Glyptothek, Munich. On the original, legs and arms were broken in six pieces, but were refitted with no remodeled restorations of any consequence. Baron Prokesch von Osten bought the statue. Villagers told me there in 1898, that an English vessel anchored at Kenchreai by night to export the statue secretly, which its discoverer, upon seeing her previously combined signal, took aboard. They call the statue ὁ βαδιλεὐς ὁ Άπολλωνας King Apollo. Numerous examples have come to light, since 1836, of early Greek male statues in the attitude of this one. so the Apollo of Thera, two at Actium one at Orchomenos, several on Mt. Ptous Boeotia, one on the island of Melos, one in Attica. The last, and probably our statue, were sepulchral effigies. Some are dedicated to Apollo. Homolle calls the two big ones at Dlephi Kleobis and Biton of Argos. The apollo of Tenea is the most advanced and probably the latest of the earlier type. The taste and effort of Crown Prince, later King Louis of Bavaria, endowed Munich with one of the finest antique sculpture galleries in Europe. Put in order by Professor Furtwaengler’s purchases. This museum ought to have the Eirene of Kephisodotos, and examples of the famous Aeginetau sculptures.

From a marble statue discovered on the island of Melos, Cyclades, in 1820. Two wooden slabs have now been removed from between lower and upper sections of the Aphrodite. A left hand and apple preserved in Paris probably belonged to her. The goddess’s left hand probably held her dress. But other restorations have been ventured: (A) With a round shield, supposed to be her husband’s and using its convex surface as a mirror; (B) As Wingless Victory, writing on a shield like the winged Victories of Trajan’s Column and of Brescia; (C) Coupled with Mars (Greek: Ares), as in certain extant, antique groups. The Marquis de Rivières, French ambassador to the Porte, secured it then for 40,000 francs, and presented it to Louis XVIII. The King placed the statue in the Louvre Museum, Paris, where it remains that gallery’s finest antique sculpture. Furtwaengler and Possenti give the statue the apple and a cippus under its left elbow and name it The Fortune of Melos. Compare Furtwaengler’s Masterpiece page... A lost inscription described the statue in characters of about 200 B.C., as a work of Antigonos (?) of Antioch on the Maeander.

Hearst Museum object titled Statue (reproduction), accession number 21-50, described as Cast of primitive statue of a women with a dedicatory inscription reciting its gift to Artemis by Nikandre. Opinions differ whether the subject is Artemis or Nikandre herself. The dedication reads: “Nickandre dedicated me to the farshooter, to the dart-scatterer (Artemis)--Nikandre the noble daughter of Deinodikes of Naxos, and sister of Deinomenes, and wife of Phracos.” The date of this rude sculptor is the VII Century, B.C. Part of one arm is missing and the face is battered.

Height 0-.9 meters. Described TAUpTá 21. The goddess has wings on her shoulders and feet. She wears a tight belted tunic with flat bands once elaborately painted. The statue rested on a stem, leaving both feet free. Another one, by Archermos, is in the Akropolis Museum. Location: Delos, Cyclades. National Museum.
