Description:
Cast of primitive statue of a women with a dedicatory inscription reciting its gift to Artemis by Nikandre. Opinions differ whether the subject is Artemis or Nikandre herself. The dedication reads: “Nickandre dedicated me to the farshooter, to the dart-scatterer (Artemis)--Nikandre the noble daughter of Deinodikes of Naxos, and sister of Deinomenes, and wife of Phracos.” The date of this rude sculptor is the VII Century, B.C. Compare Bulletin de Correspondence hellénique 1879. Rohl, Inscriptiones graecae Antiquissimae 407. Island marble. Discovered in 1878 by Homolle and the French School of Athens. Part of one arm is missing and the face is battered.
