Hearst Museum object titled Basket bowl, accession number 1-148885, described as Twined basket.  Adiantum fern stem design material.  Tag:  "Klamath R. Tribes Att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl.  Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented.  Warp material is hazel.  Background weft is conifer root.  The weft design overlay is beargrass and maidenhair fern stem.  At the starting knot there is an inch of three strand twining.  After that is plain twining for .5 inch.  After that two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues until the rim where there are three rows of three strand twining.  The design on the base is a ring of black and tan spiral overlay.  That is followed by one ring of maidenhair fern.  On the sides there are three sets of a diagonal stacked parallelograms outlined by stepped triangles.  At the rim is a ring of alternating beargrass and maidenhair fern.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction.   The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is only on the outside.  There is a hair woven into the basket.  The basket is from Northwest California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design has a beargrass background with maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to 1/2 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of two stacked parallelograms with two stacked trapezoids and a triangle on their interior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California, perhaps Yurok based on the area of collection.
