Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-67845, described as Coiled, wide mouth, sloping sides.  Tag "Yuki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled broad basket bowl.  There is no evidence of use wear.  The basket has a twined start.  The warps are peeled shoot rods and splints.  The weft material is peeled redbud with unpeeled redbud designs.  The start has three weft rows of unpeeled redbud.  The main design is seven horizontal single rows of unpeeled redbud, separated by three bands of peeled redbud, with a break that lines up.  There are a few random rectangles.  The weft fag ends and weft moving ends are concealed. The rim is plain wrapped and the rim coil ending is blunt with a quick taper formed by five back stitches, it is not cut off at the end. The wefts are split less than 5% on the exterior and on the interior 30-35% are split.  The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and down to the right slant of weft twist.  Based on the materials, design and techniques the basket is either from the Yuki or Wailaki.  There is a human hair woven into the rim.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-12027, described as Large flaring coiled basket.  Tag: "Yuki".  Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled flaring basket serving bowl, with residue from food.  The basket has a tight spiral start.  The coil foundation is one rod and splints of peeled shoots.  The wefts are peeled redbud with unpeeled redbud designs.  The design on the sides of the basket is two horizontal zigzags that almost, but do not intersect. There are no random rectangles. The rim is plain wrapped with some rim ticks.  The coil ending is tapered with five remaining diagonal backstitches.  The weft fag ends are primarily clipped or bound under, with some concealed.  The weft moving ends are primarily bound under.  The exterior has below 5% split stiches.  The interior of the basket has nearly 50% split stiches.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket was made by a half Wailaki half Yuki person.  The basket has more Wailaki aspects, with the lack of random rectangles and the design of non-intersecting lines, than Yuki aspects, but shares common Yuki and Wailaki techniques and materials.

The start is twined.  The warps are three rods.  The wefts are peeled redbud as a background and unpeeled redbud designs.  The design is five vertical lines of unpeeled redbud.  There are random rectangles, in a light color.  The rim is plain wrapped with a blunt coil ending, with three overstitches, with the warps clipped.  The weft fag ends are bound under and the weft moving ends are concealed.  On the exterior 10% of the wefts are split and the interior wefts are over 75% split. The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.  Based on the materials, design, and random rectangles this most likely a Yuki basket but Wailaki cannot be ruled out.  There is a hair woven into the bottom exterior third of the basket.

The coil foundation is three rods of peeled shoots.  The wefts are peeled redbud and unpeeled redbud.  The main design is two continuous vertical lines that cross the whole basket of peeled redbud, one narrow and one wide.  There are no random rectangles.  The rim is plain wrapped.  The rim coil ending is blunt, cut, and has two backstitches.  The weft fag ends are clipped with some bound under.  The weft moving ends are bound under or concealed.  The weft stiches on the exterior are less than 5% split.  The weft interior stitches are 35-40% split.  The basket has an exterior workface, a rightward work direction, and a down to the right slant of weft twist.  There is a human hair at the bottom exterior of the basket.  Based on the materials and techniques this basket is Yuki or based on the lack of random rectangles possibly a Wailaki basket.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-12189, described as Large old plate form coiled basket.  Samuel A. Barrett field notes, p. 109:  "tcegat"  . Tag: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Coiled cooking basket with flaring sides, used.  The start is plain twined, and 3/4 inch in diameter, slightly indented, the basket turns into coiling thereafter.  The warps are rods and splints.  The wefts are redbud, peeled and unpeeled.  The rim is plain wrapped, with a tapered ending.   There are several horizontal bands of design, with five checkered rows, followed by a mottled band, followed by six solid rows.  There are many Yuki-style signature rectangles. The majority of the stitches are non-interlocking.  About a 1/4 of the stitches are split, mostly towards the rim.  The fag ends are concealed. There is a down to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction, with an exterior workface.  Coiled Wailaki baskets of this size are very rare.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-12197, described as Globose coiled basket in good condition.  All over stepped diagonal lines in red and yellow-white.  On bottom, solid colored rows and checked rows.  One tag: "Wailaiki att." Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled globular basket bowl, with no residue.  Pinhole start slightly indented.  Three rod foundation.  Redbud wefts, both peeled and unpeeled.  The overall design is diagonal steps.  The design at the base is unusual, with three concentric bands of unpeeled redbud with alternating vertical stripes. The rim is wrapped, with a 3/8 inch tapered ending; the last few wefts are unpeeled redbud.  The basket has an exterior workface, with a rightward work direction and a mixed slant of weft twist.  The weft fag ends are clipped and concealed; the moving ends are concealed and clipped.  There are split stitches on the interior.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-255033, described as Round with slightly straight sides, flat bottom. Rhomboid design in red - brown and black on wheat colored field. Upper rim is coiled over sticks with crossed stick openwork. Rough workmanship, plain twined with half - twist overlay. Conifer root, white grass, maidenhair fern, dyed woodwardia fern.  Tag "Klamath River". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined globular basket bowl. Crossed warp starting knot, indented.  The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is in beargrass, red-dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern.  Starting at the starting knot, there is 1 inch of diagonal twining over two warps, followed by 3 weft rows of plain twining over one warp, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1 weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1 weft row of lattice twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by 1/16 inch of crossed warp openwork, followed by a wrapped rim.  The rim is wrapped with beargrass and an uncertain material.  The main design is four elements of three stacked parallelograms with a diagonal diamond chain running through them.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven into the side of the basket.
Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-12119, described as Very old burden basket.  Fragile.  Caked with grime (tarweed?), worn.  Hoop broken in 3 places; hole in bottom repaired by crude coiling.  Warps broken in one place.  Conical shape, plain twined except bottom 7 cm that is 3-strand twining.  Hoop lashed to rim with buckskin.  Also buckskin sewing at overlap of 2 sticks, splitshoot sewing over a break.  White 2-faced (?) overlay design obscured by grime; all of the plain twined area had design of zigzagging stepped parallelograms (?). Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined burden basket, used.  The original starting knot is partially missing and there is a lighter replacement material coiled at the base.  The basket has peeled shoot warps with conifer root wefts and beargrass overlay. From the bottom of the basket above the repair there is three strand twining for 2 1/2 inches, followed by plain twining the rim, which is trimmed.  The workface is on the exterior.  The rim has a rod attached with leather lashing on the interior.  The overlay is primarily single sided, with the primary design on the exterior. The basket slightly undulates; one side is flattened, probably from carrying.
Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-12096, described as Burden basket; somewhat worn and very grimy from use.  Conical shape; twined.  2-face overlay designs in white:  thin dotted stripe below rim; band of connected right triangles below; dominant design, 3 zigzag bands of something similar to "foot design" of Northwest California; below this, a sort of stripe.  A hoop is lashed inside top edge to form rim with buckskin.  Carrying strap is part buckskin and part cotton cloth.  Bottom of basket was begun with rawhide weft.  3-strand twining and plain twining.  Tag: "1083".  Three other tags "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined conical burden basket, used.  Crossed warp start, in a perpendicular style.  Warps are a peeled shoot and wefts are conifer root with a beargrass design overlay.  There are 1.5 inches of wide three strand twining at the base followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by three rows of three strand twining, followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by two rows of three strand twining, followed by two rows of plain twining, followed by one row of twining over multiple warps in a unique non-linear style, plain twining continues to the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  There is a reinforcing rod held on at the rim by leather lashing, in Southern Humboldt Athabaskan style, as well as coiled peeled and unpeeled shoots.  The overlay is irregular, with the primary overlay on the exterior.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.
Hearst Museum object titled Burden basket, accession number 1-12117, described as Very old burden basket.  Quite dirty and worn from use.  Two holes stitched up, other cracks.  The hoop has been crudely resewn to rim.  The bottom 5 cm at the tip have been replaced by rough coiling (the rest of the basket is twined).  For 3.5 cm above coiled tip is 3-strand twining. Buckskin strap attached.  Basket is conical in shape.  Tag: "Wailaki" Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined and coiled burden basket, used.  Coiled oval start.  The basket has a splint coil foundation.  On the twined part of the basket the warp material is a peeled shoot, possibly willow; the wefts are conifer root.  Starting at the starting knot there is coiling for  2 1/4 inches followed by 1 inch of three strand twining that has some plain twining in the last row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim.  The rim is folded over into the interior of the basket around a reinforcing rod in some areas.  The basket somewhat undulates and has a flat surface, probably where it was worn on the back.  The twined work direction is to the right, with an exterior workface and up to the right slant of weft twist.  The coiling is a rightward direction.  The coiled weft twist is down and to the right and the weft fag ends are tucked.
